8 years ago tonight was a favorite of mine, the Sufjan Christmas show at the Metro
My favorite part of the show was he closed with Christmas Unicorn of course, and he decided to jump off the top of his upright piano about 10 times in a row for some reason. Pretty surprised he didn't twist his ankle at some point during that.

on this day in 2004, i went to a show in chicago for the first time as a resident. it was with the autumn defense, abstract giants and the safes at metro. someone else may have played, but that's all we stayed for.
in 2011, wilco at the vic. we were standing pretty far toward the back and i wasn't thrilled with the setlist, but there was a middle section that was pretty good. in 2012, bare mutants and radar eyes at the bottle. in 2013, radar eyes and touched by ghoul at the bottle. in 2018, mannequin men and tight phantomz at the bottle. i think this was the first time they'd played in a while and it was just a send-off. but i really enjoyed hearing those songs live again. in 2019, wilco and robyn hitchcock at the chicago theatre. this is the only time my girlfriend's seen wilco. 2-3 songs into it she said she didn't like it. by the end, her opinion had turned around.

my first show in chicago as a resident was roger clyne & the peacemakers at the abbey (rip). a year later i would be working for him, 2 years later i would be ripping tequila shots with him at lincoln hall and flying to mexico on the company dime to see him headline his own resort-festival.
his music is really stupid (apart from the bitchin' king of the hill theme song) but he is one of the artists i think is the most important to my life.

Today is also the 10 year anniversary of the only time I sat up in the upper balcony area for MCR at the HoB. I stayed up there for part of the opener, went downstairs and no one was checking the wristbands of where people were supposed to be, so I just stayed on the main floor the rest of the night.

This is very cool, and I will still stump for Banditos. I think there is still a signed Refreshments poster somewhere at my mom's house.

That is wild! My first show in Chicago as a resident was Jeff Tweedy at Lounge Ax. I went with a guy I'd lived with in college and he abandoned me early in the show to lean on the bar while I moved closer to the front. Later he was upset with me and revealed he had a bad back and couldn't stand for long periods 🤷♀️ It was very smoky and Sue was hugely pregnant with Sam. I believe the opener was listed as a "surprise" and I was convinced for some reason it was going to be the Jayhawks or Golden Smog. I definitely stopped by a few times the week before to ask the door guy if he knew who was opening lol. I had been a Chicago resident for 18 days (and oh, how it showed) Setlist: 1. Sunken Treasure 2. Sugar Baby 3. Dreaming 4. Heavy Metal Drummer 5. Hesitating Beauty 6. I'm Always In Love 7. (Was I) In Your Dreams 8. I Threw It All Away 9. Alone 10. Screen Door 11. She's A Jar 12. Red-Eyed And Blue 13. I Got You (At The End Of The Century) 14. Casino Queen 15. Someday Soon 16. Via Chicago 17. A Shot In The Arm 18. James Alley Blues 19. We've Been Had 20. Lost Love 21. Passenger Side 22. The Long Cut 23. Dreamer In My Dreams 24. Ashes Of American Flags 25. How To Fight Loneliness 26. California Stars 27. Wait Up 28. I'm The Man Who Loves You 29. Christ For President 30. Hoodoo Voodoo 31. New Madrid 32. Summer Teeth 33. Henry & The H Bombs 34. Candyfloss

I got to see Jeff at Lounge Ax too thankfully, may have been the same show!
My Lounge Ax story is I had a ticket to see Golden Smog there, I was extremely psyched to see them. The door guy was very famous/notorious for not letting people in without an ID, even if you were constantly there. I got a ticket on the way to the venue, and had no other ID that they would accept. So I didn't get to see Golden Smog. : (

My first show as an adult Chicago resident was Foxygen at Lincoln Hall. Absolutely terrific.
One of those shows where it looks like the band is going to break up on stage.

I...have no idea what my first show here as a resident would have been. Something in September of 2011, most likely.
My FB memories recently included my stretches of 5 or 6 shows in consecutive nights that I did each of the last couple of years. Some of the highlights were Marked Men, the National at the opera house, and that sweet drone/noise event that Red Bull put on.

If this was in the fall of 2014 on the Star Power tour, then it was also my first show as a Chicago resident. Granted, I was an 18 y/o college freshman at the time, but still.

I also just assumed they were all constantly hanging around Chicago playing random late night surprise shows. You saw them at the Vic a few years back, didn't you? I can only imagine how epic those Lounge Ax shows would've been back in the day.

I was also not at that Janes show. I had pretty much no money at that time and was not about to pay big show $$$. I’ll see if I can figure out what it might have been.

When he gave it back, he uncorked a bottle of red wine and gave it to him too and said "thanks man!" i remember mountain song being so fucking loud, colossal, powerful that night, too. they blew confetti in from the back, and i remember it seeming like there was a TON of it...made for a crazy effect to see blue and white confetti blowing AT the band instead of away from them, like they were playing in a blizzard or something. im probably remembering it much more dramatically than it actually was.
