23 years ago on this date I saw Garbage at the now-defunct American Theater in STL. My two roommates went with me, all seats were GA and we got a great spot in the balcony. I noticed several cameras there, I wondered if the set was being filmed for MTV's Live From the 10 Spot (anyone remember this show?). Garbage played a great set, they were touring for their second album, so they did all the hits from it and the first one, plus a cover of Big Star's 'Thirteen'. Shirley mentioned that one of her favorite movies as a child was Meet Me in St. Louis. The finale was a request (I think?) from someone in the crowd, the rare track 'Trip My Wire'. I think Girls Against Boys opened, but I don't remember any of their set.

One of my favorite weird shows was 2 years ago tonight, I went to the Museum of Science and saw Bloodyminded and Nika, which was a new solo project from Nika from Zola Jesus. Bloodyminded was great as usual, the Nika set was okay. To the best of my knowledge, that's the only show I've been to where there was a giant jar of kidney stones nearby.
After that, I got over to the Metro quickly for Neon Indian. Unfortunately, that set was quite a snooze and not really worth the effort.

on this day in 1995, I saw the geraldine fibbers at quaker goes deaf, the wicker park record store. I was so impressed with carla and her band that I immediately bought a ticket for their show that night at the riviera where they opened for urge overkill. Nels Cline was not yet their guitarist, though.
on this day in 2013, the better half and I saw the now late phil cohran at logan hardware.
on this day in 2017, I saw active bird community and headliner maximo park at lincoln hall.

21 years ago on this date I saw Bon Jovi at the hockey arena in STL. I think I went to this because I still had some Ticketmaster coupons that were about to expire, and this was the only show I had any interest at all in seeing. I'm a fan of their 80's hits, and singing along to those was fun - the 1-2 punch of 'Lay Your Hands on Me' and 'Bad Medicine' to end the set was strong. Mr. Bon Jovi had some corny stage banter though - he said something about being kicked out of everywhere and the Three Little Pigs, I dunno. Less Than Jake opened for them, all I remember about them was their shout out to Beatle Bob, and "thank you we're Skid Row!"

21 years ago on this date I saw Prince at the hockey arena in STL. This show wasn't as great as the previous time I saw him (January of '98), but it was still really good. 'When Doves Cry' only got played over the speakers when everyone was offstage, but he did play 'Let's Go Crazy' and 'Purple Rain'.
20 years ago on this date I saw U2 at the same place, on the Elevation tour. Of the times I've seen the band, this was my favorite. I had a seat in the upper level, so I got a full view of their stage setup - the lights going ballistic during the climax of 'Until the End of the World' was very cool to see. They played a lot of old stuff like 'I Will Follow', 'New Year's Day', 'Angel of Harlem', and 'Bad'. During 'One', they had a scrolling list of the names of people who had died on 9/11, that was a poignant moment. Garbage opened the show, and they were pretty good.

on this day in 1997, i saw stubborn all-stars, the slackers, skinnerbox, siren six, and the eclectics at the first unitarian church in philly. my friend's parents drove at least 4 of us there and then went to a fancy dinner. i was amped to see siren six and stubborn all-stars. the latter rarely played live and, unfortunately, it showed. but i recall the other bands being pretty good. on the way home, we came to a DUI checkpoint and i think there was some back-and-forth between the cop and my friend's dad. but they let him go.
on this day in 2011, i saw digitalism at metro. like a week before this show, they cut the ticket price in half. so i went for $10. it was still nowhere near full. but they were fun.
on this day in 2015, i saw white reaper and flesh panthers at subterranean. both bands were really good.

on this day in 2004, i saw phoenix at world cafe live in philly. this was their first show in the US. what i knew of them was like electro-pop, but they were way more guitar-driven than i expected. a girl in the crowd yelled out for "if i ever feel better" after every song. it took the crowd a bit to get going, but eventually it got a little chaotic. this was also one of the first shows at this venue. they'd apparently done seated shows with drink tables before and just shoved the tables to the side for this show. as the band got more dancey through the night, people in the crowd started getting up to dance on the tables. venue staff made weak efforts to get them back on the floor. they eventually did play "if i ever feel better" and the aforementioned girl lost her shit. the first encore was an acoustic version of "everything is everything" even though they'd played the electric version during the set. then they came out for a second encore and only said "this is a new song." i'm sure it ended up on the next album, but they never said a name and i don't recall what it sounded like. really fun evening.
on this day in 2005, i saw depeche mode at allstate arena. one of my friends worked for q101 and rigged a ticket giveaway contest for me. the seats were great. my then-girlfriend hated depeche mode, so i went with a friend who said he was a casual fan. yet he knew every lyric to every song that wasn't from the latest album. this was my first time seeing them and i loved it. this was a great setlist and gave me a lot more appreciation for a handful of songs.
on this day in 2006, i started the night with the living end at house of blues. i'd seen them years earlier on warped tour and they were great. this time they were good. i don't recall much of what they played, except for a few that i did really want to hear from the first two albums. then i followed that up with tokyo police club at schubas. i didn't care too much for them and rarely listened to them again after this show.
on this day in 2008, i saw boris at the empty bottle. this was ok. they were noodling around a lot and i wanted my ears blown out by big riffs. i don't think it was bad, but my memory of this night is that there was a weird vibe at the bottle.

9 years ago on this date I saw The Coup at The Blue Note. I think this was their first ever tour, I was surprised they were playing our town. The show was pretty good, though they were touring for Sorry To Bother You, which I like very little of. I shook Boots Riley's hand afterwards and told him that Steal This Album was one of my favorite rap albums, he seemed humbled by the comment.
8 years ago on this date I saw High on Fire and Kvertelak at The Granada in Lawrence, KS. I went to this mostly because I was still in KC the day after Thanksgiving, and it was something to do. Both bands were good.

on this day in 2000, i saw man or astroman and enon at laga in pittsburgh. this was a pretty fun show. the thing i remember most is that they brought out the tesla coil near the end and some kid in the front got a major jolt. i didn't actually see what happened, but the whole band was suddenly pretty concerned and the singer checked that the kid was ok before continuing. i think he was fine, just didn't expect whatever happened.
on this day in 2016, i saw the men at the beat kitchen. they'd just released Devil Music a few weeks earlier, but only played one or two songs from it. much of the set was newer than the album. most of the songs were pretty raw and the crowd never really got into it. not the best time i've seen them.

4 years ago on this date I saw Grizzly Bear at the Palace Theater in Minneapolis. Ex-boarder Timbo wanted to see them again, and they didn't have any dates in MO. He asked if I wanted to tag along with him and his friend and drive up there. I'm not a huge fan of the band, but road trip, so I said yes. The show was pretty good, we skipped the opener which was serpentwithfeet. After the show, we had burgers at a nearby place and a few beers, walking back to the hotel, I was teetering on the edge of throwing up, but I held it together. The next morning, we went to Paisley Park, which was very cool (and moving).
3 years ago I saw Cannibal Corpse at the Blue Note. This was the same night one of my fiancee's friends had her annual Tacky Christmas Sweater Party. So I went to that for a few hours, then went to the show, and I managed to get there about 15 minutes before CC started (good timing, me). There had Christmas trees flanking the stage, at one point, George (their lead singer) said, "if you hate Christmas, you suck!" The band sounded strong and I had a good time, they played my two favorite songs, 'Pit of Zombies' and 'Kill or Become'.

on this day in 2010, i saw the 1900s at the empty bottle. Return of the Century was a really fun album and i think this was their first show in a while. it was entertaining. one of the singers in this band kind of annoys me with her stage presence, like she's doing everyone a favor by being on stage. that's the impression i've always had about her. but she sings well and was tolerable this night.

8 years ago (geez, it was that long ago?) on this date I saw Kanye West, with Kendrick Lamar opening, at the formerly-named Sprint Center in KC. I drove up on a whim, b/c I had heard about the show and really liked Yeezus. I got a ticket from someone outside for $50, I thought it was a floor seat, but it turned out to be in the stands. There were not a lot of people there - the floor and lower levels on the sides were mostly full, but the back seats didn't have many people, and no one in the upper levels. The show itself was great - the huge mountain was impressive, and the runway into the crowd lifted off the floor. The ending run of songs he did was awesome, I still remember the red flares the dancers held that lit up all at the same time during 'All of the Lights'. Kendrick was pretty good too, he brought out Tech N9ne to help out with a song at one point. This was worth the 4-hour round trip.

22 years ago on this date I went to 105.7 The Point's Ho Ho Ho Show at the now-defunct Mississippi Nights in STL. The lineup was The Urge, Jimmy's Chicken Shack, Lit, Marcy Playground, Moby, and Lo-Fidelity All-Stars. Moby was surprisingly great, this was the first time I saw him. He was running around, playing drums and guitar, he got the crowd moving. There was a construction beam across the low ceiling, he grabbed on to that with his hands and feet and crawled a bit out over the crowd. He won me over. Marcy Playground didn't play 'Sex and Candy'. Everyone else was OK, though The Urge energized the crowd as well, since they're from STL. They were the last to play, and I only stayed for a bit of their set, I had to catch the Metrolink before it stopped running. I had a good time, I had never been to a showcase like that in a small club.
