on this day in 2008, i saw constantines and obits at the bottle. this was obits' first tour and they'd only released a single at this point. but there was a bootleg floating around, so some people knew the basics of songs. i think there was more excitement for them than constantines because they were hyped as rick froberg's hot snakes followup band. and i thought they were really raw but quite good. i think they played a lot of what'd end up on their debut album and then also a cover of "military madness" by graham nash, which was a b-side. constantines were always a great live band and this was no different, even if i wasn't super into their most recent album then. (since then, i've appreciated it more.) but they played a lot of old songs and i think they covered "fuckin' up" by crazy horse too.
on this day in 2012, i saw japandroids and david vandervelde at metro. this was a weird pairing. i think an original opener cancelled right before this show because i do recall vandervelde was a last-minute announcement. he and his band were good, but the crowd gave them nothing. i think this was their second show in chicago under Celebration Rock, so they were crushing most of those songs. although, brian was moody. but that wasn't exactly rare.
on this day in 2017, i saw the national at the civic opera house. i think i got the ticket from a fellow boarder? i was sitting next to a girl and she asked if i'd seen the national before. i told her it was the 15th or 16th time i'd seen them and she was like "whoa, you must be a super fan." no, they just tour a lot and i see them on almost every tour. it was her first show of theirs. she was very excited. this was probably the best-sounding rock show i've seen at the civic opera house. the bar had been set low in the past. it was enjoyable. it'd been a few years since i'd seen them do a full show, so it was fun to see them again. i have a bad record of seeing the national on multi-night stands at the show with the setlist i like less. this setlist wasn't bad, but the previous night's had some songs i really wanted to hear.

Lol that was my friend who sold you the ticket. I was supposed to go and see the show but my exam schedule didn’t quite shake out for it.

16 years ago on this date I saw U2 at the hockey arena in STL. This was the last show where I went down to a record store/ticket outlet and bought tickets when they went on sale (I got GA floor!). Outside the venue, I noticed articles of clothing and food trash on the sidewalk, I guess people were waiting a long time for the doors to open so they could potentially get in that circle stage pit? Whatever.
Kanye West opened, Bono came out and introduced him. This was after Late Registration had come out, he opened with 'Diamonds From Sierra Leone'. He had a few string players and a DJ, he sounded good.
U2 was solid overall, with a few great moments.
The good: - The opening 1-2 punch of 'City of Blinding Lights' and 'Vertigo' - 'Beautiful Day' soared - A girl behind me was screaming when Bono got near us, I turned around and gave her a 'you ok?' look, and she laughed - The ZooTV graphics just before the encore - Ending with '40'
The not-so-good: - Bono sang 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' and 'Until the End of the World' as if he had sang them 1000 times before, ho-hum - They covered 'Instant Karma' in the encore and it sounded weak - They brought a fan onstage to help with 'Yahweh' and he made mistakes - Bono's speechifying didn't add anything to the show - I wanted to hear more from the new album (minority opinion, I know)
Edit: Another for the 'good' column: acoustic 'Stuck in a Moment' with Bono + Edge

4 years ago on this date I and several other boarders were at Day 1 of Day For Night in Houston, I saw Of Montreal playing all of Hissing Fauna, Perfume Genius, Demdike Stare, Forest Swords, Laurie Anderson and Roni Size. They had shuffled around some of the time slots close to day-of, I was afraid I'd have conflicts, but fortunately that didn't happen. Perfume Genius really impressed me, the way he got into his music was kind of captivating. I was excited to see Demdike Stare and they were great, even though it was two guys playing from their laptops, they had some incredible visuals. Laurie Anderson was disappointing, she was more talk than music, and it wasn't quiet enough inside the venue (an abandoned post office). I skipped Nine Inch Nails for Roni Size, whom I had never seen, his drum-n-bass made me sweat. After his set, I came out to find a ton of people in the lobby, and it was pouring rain. I ran into ex-boarder Broc1123, he said they had to cut NIN's set short b/c of the rain. Ugh. I remember taking an overpriced Uber (festival+Rockets game = $$) back to llamaoftime 's place, we all went to iHop afterwards. Great day overall.

4 years ago on this date I was at Day 2 of Day For Night in Houston, where I saw Thom Yorke, St. Vincent, The Jesus Lizard, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, En Vogue, Priests, and Shabazz Palaces. I remember this day because the run of En Vogue->Godspeed->Jesus Lizard->StV on the same stage ruled. I had never seen The Jesus Lizard - didn't think I would ever - and they were awesome, the guy behind me was laughing a lot at David Yow's stage antics. After St. Vincent, though, there was a lot of downtime for me, as Thom Yorke wasn't scheduled until after midnight. By the time he took the stage, I - and I think a lot of people - were tired. He was fine, I'm not a big fan of his solo stuff though.
5 years ago I was at Day 1 of Day For Night where I saw Aphex Twin, John Carpenter, Daughters, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Tobacco, and several rappers (Devin the Dude, Paul Wall, etc) who billed themselves as 'Welcome to Houston'. The night before this I went barhopping with several boarders, and drank too much. I had never seen JAMC, they were great. They ended with 'Reverence' - a song I had never heard before - and it lit up my brain, I had a big grin on my face and started jumping up and down in a "this rules!" kind of way. I decided day-of to see John Carpenter even though he conflicted a bit with Aphex, as I didn't know how long he would be doing the live shows. I'm so glad I did, he was one of the best acts all weekend. After his set, I went outside to find the temperature had dropped and it was sprinkling, I made my way over to see the second half of Aphex Twin's set. He was cool, he was just playing whatever he wanted. Sometimes I'd catch a snippet of something familiar, but then he'd quickly abandon it and go in another direction. Boarders Wretched and Thissy had VIP and I ran into them afterwards.

5 years ago on this date I was at Day 2 of Day For Night in Houston where I saw Butthole Surfers, Kamasi Washington, Squarepusher, Lightning Bolt, and Ariel Pink. The temperature had dropped 20-25 degrees overnight, in the low 40s and windy. First time I've ever had to wear a hat and gloves at a music fest. I think the only vendor selling coffee at the fest had the longest line all day. After his terrible Pitchfork performance years ago I wasn't expecting much from Ariel Pink, but he and his band played it straight and they were surprisingly good, I think their set was all new material. Lightning Bolt got the crowd moving, they had some crowd surfers as well. Squarepusher was great, he was dressed in a fencing outfit for some reason, his music got people moving as well. Butthole Surfers were disappointing. I wasn't expecting the insanity of their 80's shows, but there was no sense of danger or anything in their show, they looked and sounded neutered. I didn't stick around for Travis Scott or anyone else, we were cold!

It's my brother's birthday today and it turns out the only show that I've seen with him to celebrate said day was No Age @ The Bottle in 2019. IIRC they played mostly the album that was released as Goons Be Gone (a Good Album) and "Fever Dreaming" and called it a night. I think it was both of our first times at Sportsman's Club that night which he and I have since gone back to multiple times.

24 years ago on this date I saw Prince - when he was just calling himself 'The Artist' - at Kemper Arena in KC. So my tickets were will call, I get to the venue, and there's a long line of people outside - apparently some/most of the tickets were will call. I wait in line and I'm angry, b/c I think I'm missing the show. At around 9, I finally get my ticket and go in, and the house lights are on, the show hadn't started yet! My seat was about 10 rows up on the side of the stage. Prince came out at 9:30 smiling, with his arms stretched out, and started with 'Jam of the Year'. "Kansas City, did you miss me?" The show was fantastic, one of the best I've seen in an arena. He was dancing, rolling around on stage, played solo piano and guitar, it was a blast. The encore was 'Kiss', 'Gett Off', and the big finale was 'When Doves Cry', with two green lasers forming a dove flapping its wings. I was hoping he would come back out for one more song ('1999' please), but that was it after 2 hours.
One more tomorrow, and I'm through.

26 years ago on this date I saw Chuck Berry at The Blue Note, with my Dad. It was a good show, he played a lot of his best-known tunes, and we both enjoyed it. He didn't do 'You Never Can Tell', though, which I thought he would play because it had become popular thanks to Pulp Fiction.

i played around with my concert history over the weekend trying to visualize it in some cool way. the only view that i got to look neat was a bubble chart of artists by weekday: public.tableau.com/views/ShowHistory_16425178292340/Sheet1a few nerdy notes: - my morning jacket and wilco are the only two bands i've seen on every day of the week. - the most i've seen a band on one weekday is radar eyes 8 times on a saturday. - i've seen 7 bands in 3 countries.
