on this day in 2009, i saw sleep out and canasta at the beat kitchen. i can't remember any sleep out songs now, but i apparently saw them several times around this time. canasta was always pretty fun too.
on this day in 2014, i saw wilco at the riv. by the time we showed up, the only 4 seats together we could find were literally in the last row of the balcony. we couldn't see much of value, but it sounded great. encore #2 was a few acoustic songs.

on this day in 2007, i saw richard hawley at the abbey pub. i was way into Coles Corner and the followup that came out right before this show. one of the guitarists broke a string during the first or second song. while they changed strings, hawley played "lonesome town" on his own. it was quite good. later on he mentioned before one song that he'd written it when he was 15 or 16 but it didn't get on an album he worked on until his late 30s. i couldn't even imagine still having available a song i wrote at 16, or that something a teenager wrote should be so good. this was a really enjoyable evening. on the way out, my girlfriend said something like "i need to listen to more music like that."

on this day in 2013, i saw dwight yoakam at the warfield. my girlfriend had to work in SF that week, so we flew out early to spend the weekend. several weeks beforehand, i noticed that dwight yoakam was playing saturday and mentioned it. she wanted to make plans with our friends before committing to the show. ok, fine. a few days beforehand, though, she said just the two of us were going to one of her favorite sushi places on saturday night. i countered that we could get dinner early before the show. she's like "yeah, we'll see." saturday night rolls around. we're at the hotel after being out and about. i again say we should go to dinner early and then go to the show. i guess i was a little agitated. whenever i'd brought up the show, she was enthusiastic about going but then sidelined it. she snapped at me - "we're going to the show! i bought tickets as a surprise!" it turned out we had to walk past the warfield to get to that sushi place, so her plan was to lead us to dinner but go to the show. of course, then i had to ask "so what were we going to do about dinner?" she was not amused.
the warfield is set up a little like the vic. we got a good spot on the first level overlooking the pit. this show cooked. his band was spectacular. they ripped through a lot of covers (several buck owens tunes, "ring of fire", "dim lights, thick smoke", some others i don't know or can't recall), some solid album tracks, ended on a string of hits, and encored with another cover and a killer "suspicious minds." the crowd was way into it. there were a lot of very good dancers on the floor, and also possibly the drunkest person i've ever seen. this dude could barely stand but was still trying to line dance. he was given a very wide berth as he stumbled around before he eventually collapsed in a chair. i think they played about two and a half hours. it was terrific.

on this day in 2006, i saw the dears at metro. i have some friends who are mega-fans and probably encouraged me to go to this with them. i'm sure the show was fine. i can't separate this one from when i saw them at metro the previous year.
on this day in 2014, i saw wilco at the riv. i think i was on the floor far to the right. my recollection is that most of the regular set was just ok. and then they started to turn it on near the end. that momentum carried over into the encore, which was great. and then the second encore was acoustic but still pretty good. 4 songs from AM is probably the most i've heard from that album at one show, too.
on this day in 2017, i saw marked men at the bottle. i'd missed them twice at the bottle in recent years. once i was in sydney for new year's and the other i was at primavera sound. so it's not like i really regretted being elsewhere. but i was amped to finally see them. daylight robbery opened and i thought they were really good. i ran into a friend from college who i absolutely would not have expected at this show. marked men were good, not great. they're not exactly the most talkative or charismatic guys. they just sort of rip through the songs as fast as they can. but i still really enjoyed hearing them live.
on this day in 2019, i saw say sue me at the bottle. i had low expectations for this show and they were completely blown out of the water. this was really good. i always thought of them as really poppy but they played more raw. i think they played everything i wanted to hear and even a couple covers that i can't recall now too.

23 years ago on this date I saw the Goo Goo Dolls at the Blue Note. This was after 'Iris' had become a huge hit, so I bought two tickets, and sold the extra to a guy while waiting in line to get in to the venue. I watched the show standing around on the upper level with some friends I ran into. They opened strong with 'Dizzy', 'Long Way Down' and 'Lazy Eye', the latter is the only song I still enjoy by them, and I was surprised they played it because it was on the Batman and Robin soundtrack (I don't remember it getting any radio play either). The rest of the show was fine, the very end had Johnny coming out with a white electric guitar to do a solo song, at the end, he smashed it. I thought this was awesome at the time b/c I had never seen anyone do that live before. I bought a band sticker that I had on my acoustic guitar for several years.

22 years ago on this date I saw Billy Joel at the hockey arena in STL with my folks. I think I brought this up to them b/c I was interested in going (one of the first tapes I ever owned was his 'Greatest Hits Vol. I and II'). He played (mostly) the hits and it was a good show, I was glad he played 'This is the Time', 'Pressure' and 'I Go To Extremes'. My Dad wanted to hear 'Piano Man', 'Only the Good Die Young', and 'Scenes From An Italian Restaurant', he did those as well. Since it was the holiday season he threw in some snippets of Christmas songs, at the time I thought it was stupid. He joked about how this was a "mini tour" and did the Dr. Evil pinkie-to-mouth gesture when he said it.

Looks like the last tour that “This is the Time” was a staple, seems he only plays it sporadically now. Pretty good set list

on this day in 2010, i saw badly drawn boy at lincoln hall. there were seats on the floor, but a lot of people stood on the sides in the back too. i think some lady was upset that i was standing at the back by the stairs. i hadn't listened to his most recent album and i think he played a lot from it because i didn't know a ton of songs. but he played well and wasn't ornery like the last time i'd seen him. he still talked a bunch, but didn't go overboard. it was a fine show.
on this day in 2011, i saw over the rhine and milk carton kids at old town school of folk music. milk carton kids sounded great, but their rehearsed banter was so cheesy and cringy. it's like they thought they were the smothers brothers but not really funny. they should've stuck to playing. over the rhine was much better. the difference in professionalism between the acts was striking. they ended with some cover that i was pretty psyched about when i recognized it, but ten years later i just cannot remember what it was.

on this day in 2011, i saw ryan adams at the cadillac palace theatre. i went with two friends but our seats weren't near each other. my seat was in one of the last rows of the floor on the left. their seats were midway back on the floor in the center. after jessica lea mayfield's set, which was fine, a guy asked if i was by myself and then asked if i would switch seats with his girlfriend. his seat was next to mine. luckily, it was a much better seat like in the 15th row on the right. i thought this was a really good set list and he seemed in a good mental space, which i couldn't really say for some shows before this one.
on this day in 2014, i saw wilco at the riv. this was the third show i attended of this riv residency. like the previous shows, this one didn't really get cooking until late. there were a few deep cuts tossed into a relatively normal set list followed by a short encore and then closing with an acoustic second encore. on the way out, two guys were talking about how wilco doesn't get the same respect that radiohead does.

I was at that Ryan Adams show in 2011 too, all I remember is my friend and I were talking to alady in the lobby during the break before Ryan’s set, and Rahm Emmanuel came walking by with two gigantic bodyguards. The funny part was my friend, alady and I were all a good foot or so taller than Rahm

The funny part was my friend, alady and I were all a good foot or so taller than Rahm hmm, i think we saw him leaving afterward. my friends and i reconvened outside. i said i thought the show was pretty good. my friend's like "eh... it was fine." he was in a grouchy mood. his girlfriend said he'd been in a funk because apparently the bears lost in some dramatic fashion earlier in the day and he was sour over it. and during that, an SUV pulled up and i'm pretty sure rahm got in.

Happily mistaken but I really don't remember this one at all.

on this day in 2002, i saw los straitjackets at rosebud in pittsburgh. this was just a fun night of mindless surf-rock. they're kind of gimmicky with the lucha libre masks and some of the choreography, but this was the first time i saw them and liked it.
on this day in 2008, i saw oasis and ryan adams at allstate arena. i was never a huge oasis fan. but one of my friends is. his girlfriend arranged this for his birthday. i thought they sounded great. we were midway back on the floor and had a lot of fun. there was a section where they reeled off 3 or 4 songs that noel sang. liam left the stage. when he came back, he said to the crowd "you won't believe what just happened back there" and within like a second they were into the next song. i don't think noel and liam interacted with each other the whole show.
on this day in 2012, i saw the faint at metro. i don't think this was as good as when they played metro with ladytron, but this was a really fun show. i dragged a friend who likes the faint but doesn't really go to shows unless someone badgers him about it. and then he almost always has a good time.
on this day in 2013, i saw mikal cronin at logan square auditorium. i don't recall much about this show. i was there with all the people i'd seen oasis with 5 years earlier and some other friends. i'm sure it was a good time.

24 years ago on this date I saw The Rolling Stones at the dome (where the Rams used to play) in STL. This was my second time seeing them, it was on the Bridges to Babylon tour. This girl I worked with went with me, I remember her saying she was excited just to be in the same room as Mick Jagger. There was also a moment where they blew out some confetti and she wanted to catch some, but we weren't close enough. The show was as awesome as the show I saw in '94, though this time around I knew that it was going to be a big spectacle. I was very happy with the setlist, they played a few songs they didn't play the previous time, like 'Let's Spend the Night Together', 'Gimme Shelter', 'The Last Time', and 'Sympathy For the Devil'. After Keith sang a few songs, everyone left the stage, and a bridge came out to a mini-stage where the band played a few songs in the crowd. A pair or two of bras and panties were thrown, lolz. They also had a few special guests, Dave Matthews came out to sing on 'Wild Horses', and Taj Mahal played on 'Corrina Corrina'. We both had a great time. They filmed this for a VHS/DVD, used copies are affordable!

Maybe for some of us but also probably not all of us. For example, most of the shows I have been to I have not discussed in this thread.
However, on this day 10 years ago I saw Wilco for the first time at the very back of the Civic Opera House.
