NYE 1998 I attended "Prince's New Year's Eve Party" at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Morris Day & The Time was the headliner. Prince was in attendance but did not perform. I think it was in MGM's replica "Studio 54" nightclub. It was a pretty small venue and at one point Prince was walking through the crowd and stopped right behind me, maybe 6-8 feet between us. Didn't dare try to interact as he was surrounded by bodyguards and was averting his gaze downward. Was pretty cool to be that close regardless. There was also an elevated chair right in front of center stage that he sat in for a good part of the show.

Last year I was in Johannesburg watching Solange at midnight with Angela Davis standing like 10 feet away from me. Was a wild moment in life.
And now here we are. MEH

i haven't been to a new year's eve show in a while, but i saw some pretty good ones. 2010: japandroids @ schubas Just here to be jealous about this one. I think the smallest venue I've seen them at so far is Metro on the Celebration Rock tours.

That Disappears show was everything a NYE show should be, honestly. what a great show this was. Shame at the bottle last year also was enjoyable.

3 years ago today was the St. Vincent show at the Chicago Theater. should be some interesting memories around this time now, since this is usually when the Tomorrow Never Knows Music Festival has happened in the past.

I thought I was going crazy for a second because I knew I had taken my sister to St. Vincent at the Chicago Theater as a bday gift and her bday is in November but it turns out that St. Vincent has played the Chicago theater a few times! I was thinking of the s/t album tour when future islands opened. Skipped the one you’re talking about because I had already seen the show at Day for Night RIP Day for Night.

i saw tennis on this day in 2018.
two months beforehand i'd told my girlfriend that tennis and pokey lafarge/nicole atkins were playing different venues on the same night and asked her preference. she had no preference. i saw tennis was sold out, so i said we should go to the other show. but she was suddenly adamant that she see tennis that night and scoured craigslist for 2 tickets. we got there after the opener and ended up way in the back. but it was a fun show.
i missed mentioning two days ago the show at the bottle when a guy from radar eyes tussled with someone in the next band.

A few of my favorite TNK shows from this week: Yesterday was Operators at Schubas, 6 years ago Today was that great Caroline Polachek show at LH last year, and 10 years ago Cloud Nothings and Handsome Furs. That was another great show.

6 years ago tonight was my first time at buddy guy's legends for his annual january residency. the show was incredible... to see buddy wading through the crowd and climbing on top of the bar, walking outside and playing to the people in line who couldn't get in...it was something else.
this was a thursday night, but we got invited to shoot pool in the upstairs portion of the club after the show (which probably ended at 12 or 1) and ended up blackout drunk. tomorrow is the 6th anniversary of the only time ive ever thrown up at work.

2006: bon mots, paper airplane pilots, devin davis @ schubas. i had some friends who were way into that one devin davis album and i knew a guy who played in paper airplane pilots. nothing terribly memorable about the show, but i think it was the first year of TNK? i would've never expected it then to go beyond local acts or even to multiple venues.
2011: the concretes @ schubas. also TNK. this was a good show and they did something i'd always thought would be amusing but would never work - played a cover song, then gave a prize (shirt from the merch table?) to the first person who yelled out who sang the original version. it was "johnny & mary" by robert palmer.
2015: protomartyr @ lincoln hall. was this also TNK? i'm sure i was not the only boarder at this show.
2016: eternal summers, charly bliss @ lincoln hall. i'm pretty sure this was also TNK. again, i'm positive i was not the only boarder there that night. i think i was kinda disappointed in this show.

oh man i'd love a discussion on "shows we've been tossed from" I've never been tossed out of a show, but I have walked out of todd rundgren at the riviera after 2 songs because it was too boring, and I walked out of hot tuna at the riv because the crowd was a little scary / combative drunk, only to see hot tuna a little time later at the vic and this time they brought paul kantner with them.

Only time I've ever been kicked out of a show was when I was in college in Boston.
A friend and I went to see Victor Wooten play at Berklee - it wasn't really a normal concert so much as like a nice seated performance at the college for students/professors etc that was open to the public. We split a fifth of Jim Beam to pregame, and then another friend drove us so we could aggressively [] on the drive there and not have to take the train.
He starts playing and two or three songs in I know I'm going to yarf - I'm trying to watch him play all crazily like he does and listening to the music and it's all just making me too dizzy. Shouldn't have mixed during the pregame
I go out to this nice bathroom and yarf all over the stall. It was a bad scene. Next guy goes in, sees it and rats me out. I am kindly asked to leave and do so.

I've never been kicked out of a show as far as I can remember but one time at Phish at Wrigley we were smoking a J and the 80 year old usher lady came over and told us to put it out and instead of passing it down to the other side of the aisle Goodson handed her the J.

i got kicked out of the hold steady at concord because i took a hit from a j that was passed to me literally right as they came onstage and went into "your little hoodrat friend". the bouncer told me on the way out that if i want to smoke weed at a show i should use a one hitter, and i said "so i have to go because you dont like the way i smoke weed?" and he said "do you want me to call the cops?" lol we went to dennys instead

oh at the Xiu Xiu play Twin Peaks show at Thalia I had really bad food poisoning and had to diarrhea every 20 minutes but didn't want to leave the show because it was better to poop there than accidentally in my 30 minute uber ride home or whatever and security approached me thinking I was black out drunk cuz I kept going to the bathroom and I had to explain to them that I couldn't stop diarrheaing very calmly and they were like "oh"

Black Emperor play there about 5 years ago. I felt like barfing a few times. I even went to the upper level and asked if I could sit down, they wouldn't let me. The show was kind of hard to enjoy.
