I just wish one of these indie bands who flirt with jam tropes/sounds (VW, AnCo, Real Estate, etc) would actually lean into it. Would be awesome and would be a cool way to expand their audience/longevity? Did some more thinking on this topic. More bands that could fit this category: Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Grizzly Bear, War on Drugs (who're kinda close to there already), Malkmus (who WAS there w/ Real Emotional Trash but should go even further in that direction), and Wilco (at least on record: less whispery Tweedy singing and more Nels pls) So basically all the canonical Dad Rock bands

I just don't think "bands that play their songs for longer" are jam bands

Yea I agree - all the groups I mentioned above have songs with really great instrumental passages that - sometimes - are extended live. But I want to see them really get into the weeds with them and see what happens.

hot take: "_________ is a jam band now" is generally an extremely incorrect take I just wish one of these indie bands who flirt with jam tropes/sounds (VW, AnCo, Real Estate, etc) would actually lean into it. Would be awesome and would be a cool way to expand their audience/longevity? Jam band fans always overestimating how many people are into jam bands.

If Real Estate keeps pumping out semi-formulaic records for the next decade, will they maintain their already declining audience/clout? Maybe, maybe not - depends on if the coming wave of early 2010s nostalgia is as profitable as the current wave of 2000s nostalgia. Maybe someone can write a "Meet Me In The Bathroom" about Captured Tracks lol But making a pivot to jammier territory can increase your audience size amongst a group of fans who tend to be more loyal over longer periods of time, steady festival bookings, etc.

Hard pivoting back to the original intent of this thread: how was the Kim Gordon set? Seems like y'all enjoyed it - what kinda stuff did she play? She played pretty much exclusively from No Home Record and she ripped. Super energetic set and it had an incredible, almost magnetic energy to it

None of these bands are really branching into improv space yet, but they've all a.) gotten to the point of drawing out instrumental passages and b.) have shown an affinity for hallmarks of jam music either in their playing (segues, solos, atmospherics, aping Jerry's guitar tones, etc. etc. etc.) or tastes (pretty sure all of them appearing on Day of the Dead, VW excepted). So, to me, they are potential candidates to answer the question of "how should our band evolve?" with "in improvisational directions." I doubt any of them really go there, as it would require a fairly large leap of faith. But they could - the prospect of which intrigues me.

Why was Danny Brown so bad? He was extremely low energy, kept forgetting the words to his songs, and was just generally unable to keep up with his regular flow.

I'm enjoying this jam band discussion thing
I think there is a bit of a middle ground, not sure if we have word for it. Like you have acts that just kind of play the same set every night and it's pretty much just recreating the recorded sound, vs bands that add in fun jams to songs, mix up setlists every night, do new takes on old songs, etc. Best example I can think of is Vampire Weekend was like the former circa 2010-2014ish (and probably earlier but i saw them first in 2010) and much more like the latter in 2018 onwards, and I think it made them a SIGNIFICANTLY better live act. I think a lot of acts could stand to go the latter route.
I do not think a lot of acts need to go full jam band. there's maybe some where it'd be fun. specially for some like one off sets. but most of these acts could just go for a looser live set, not full improv. that could actually be brutal for some acts.
also animal collective only sounded like a jam band because we didn't know the songs they were playing. though they've always extended out some songs live

Yeah, he started pretty well and then started forgetting the words. Once that happened he never got back on track. It was also pretty close to the same set he’s been doing for ten years. Tried doing Ain’t It Funny and Really Doe, but couldn’t get through them.

Disappointments: Waxahatchee, Kinda surprised by this, I thought it was a really stunning set It’s primarily because I went into it without having listened to them and I felt the energy was really low. Just not what I was hoping for at that time. They sounded fine.
