off the top of my head, this is probably my answer, with surfer rosa a close second.  if you could combine the best material from lou reed's new sensations, mistrial, and new york into one 1980's album it would be pretty high up as well.

All these except my parents were sticklers about seat belts. Also not sure if “JUST FINE” is a fair assessment, but I can’t blame that on the hose water, outdoors, cursive and/or Sears.

1. Mookie pin this thread. Unpin the 2021 thread too god no one needs to read that anymore.

a few albums that i will throw in:

rockpile - seconds of pleasure. this is a delightfully rollicking power-pop album.
talk talk - spirit of eden. i know this gets a lot of love in the scope of influencing some major bands, but it's also a pretty good album on its own.
richard & linda thompson - shoot out the lights. this might be the best album recorded by a couple while their marriage was falling apart.
token entry - jaybird. behind some all-time cover art is a great NYHC record that i've always been a little surprised isn't lauded more against its peers.
