Stapleton made a new fan tonight and Petty and the Heartbreakers were on point. The rain was annoying at times but overall a great show. I might have more words tomorrow but for now I'm exhausted. Following up on this, other thoughts/notes/etc:
Petty seemed to be moving around much slower than the last time I saw him. Mike Campbell by contrast (who is the same age) still seemed vibrant and full of youth. Petty still sounded great though, maybe he was just really stoned.
Security were much bigger pushovers that I've seen in the past for Wrigley. It seemed as though it was very easy for people to sneak into whatever section they wanted to, however they would always stick out like sore thumb and quickly get the boot.
I wish they would just play the regular version of "Learning To Fly" rather than the Petty solo/acoustic version they've been doing for years, oh well.
Overall I had a blast and thought it was a great show.

Lots of fun last night at Wrigley, even in the rain. Stapleton was great - happy to have finally seen him. Really enjoyed his whole set. Petty and the Heartbreakers was a great time, as always. They seemed like they were genuinely having fun. Mike Campbell was fantastic. Benmont Tench killed it on the keyboards. Agree that Petty seemed like he was probably stoned. Only quibble was the midpoint when he introduces the band and then rolls into a few Wildflowers songs. Was a momentum killer, and it was raining so it was like: "Let's get to the point..." And got to see the Cubs pull off a comeback victory over the Nats when I was pre-gaming at Bernies. tl;dr - A- would do again.

Yeah, that was a blast. We got in maybe halfway through Stapleton's set and he sounded good. I don't know that I care enough about what he does to go out of my way to listen/see him again, but I'm glad I saw what I did. We only got rained on during his set, so we moved to the concourse for the end of his set.
The Petty set was incredible.

That probably would have been my favorite part of the set - love those songs ("Crawling Back to You", "Wildflowers" and "Good to Be King").

It did have an entirely different feel from the rest of the set, but I think it would've been pretty nice had the weather not been so uncomfortable.

I really like "Wildflowers" and it was great. Good to be King was stretched to about 12 minutes, which is just too long. I am not a jam band fan tho, so I am probably in the minority with that opinion. "Crawling Back to You" was fine. I guess I would have rather heard an earlier Heartbreakers track - "I Need to Know" or "Listen to Her Heart" or"Breakdown". For a 40th anniversary tour with the Heartbreakers, almost half the set was Tom Petty solo.
Again, had a great time, the set list could have been better for me tho.

Yeah, actually I would've preferred any of those three as well. With all the hits it's hard to remember what's missing.

EDIT: I've got to remember to quote.....
IRT jimmyrecard: I saw Rooney years ago before they became a tweener band. Haven't listened to their music since.

Petty was definitely well medicated. It was a good show but the pandering at the end with the Cubs jersey was pretty goofy. It reminded me of a pro wrestling house show where the main event guy would show up post-match in the local team's hockey jersey to ham it up.

I've noticed a lot artists that play Wrigley do the Cubs jersey/hat thing. Eddie Vedder gets a pass because he's a well documented Cubs fan, but I'll be curious to see if Bobby Weir is willing to play the part of corporate shill this weekend.

Neither have I, and their new music is not good (was their old music good?) Just saw they were coming through town and thought it'd be fun to see them given I listened to them a lot as a teen.

Yeah - you almost wish Theo added enough of a sweetener to have Tom come out in a Miguel Montero #47 jersey before "Don't Come Around Here No More". Alas.

Dead & Co was a fun, cultural experience last night. Shakedown was set up along Addison leading up to the ballpark, and there were no shortage of Deadheads looking for miracle tickets all around Wrigley.
I picked the right night for my tastes, as the set was full of "hits" that I was able to recognize. John Mayer was very impressive in the role of Jerry, although that wasn't a surprise. I was surprised with Oteil Burbridge, that dude is a phenomenal musician and I have no doubt he could run circles around Phil Lesh. It's a shame how low he gets billed, but I understand he doesn't carry the same name recognition as the rest.
tl;dr Dead and Company are fun and worth seeing.

Looking at these set lists really makes me wish I had grabbed a cheap seat. First band I ever saw was the Dead, though they were touring as Further at the time. It was with both Lesh and Weir which was kinda fucking incredible. Hoping they just don't stop touring so I can grab a ticket for a different show. I've heard good reviews of Mayer so I'm glad to hear that's the consensus.

i was there friday not saturday but it really felt like they were a band vs a weird frankenstein tribute situation. Setlist full of hits is such a blast.

Pet peeve exacerbated by social media this weekend: people who don't know the difference between the Grateful Dead/the Dead/Dead & Co.

U2 were pretty great last night. Joshua Tree live was beautiful, everything else was just icing. Vertigo is still an awful song, but they played Mysterious Ways, Ultraviolet, AND One after, so I at least got a small Achtung fix.
I can't imagine Lumineers being worse than OneRepublic were. Crowd loved them though.

Saw The Church tonight at City Winery. Amazing show. They were really having fun and they were amazing. Played 2 songs off a forthcoming album that were both great. Played most of the hits. First time at City Winery - liked it more than I thought, but we were stageside thanks to my sister buying tix for my birthday. They are playing again tomorrow night and I am seriously considering going again.
Steve Kilby interacted twice with my sister. I got the setlist. So. Much. Fun.
