Saturday Open Air was a ton of fun. Echo wretched's comments about logistics. Only went last year for Rammstein, which was crazy crowded. Saturday was crowded enough, the bowl was almost full for Godsmack and Korn, but the field was way less crowded.
I bought $20 bowl tickets that I was able to upgrade to field for $25 day of. Very nice return on $45, but makes me wonder how well it sold.
Highlights were Pig Destroyer, Body Count - who played "Cop Killer" which got me to the pit, Steel Panther who were hilarious, and Clutch. Only acts I did not like at all were Cane Hill - the frontman had major delusions of grandeur, and Mushroomhead - the blue man group of metal.
Was fun hanging with Eric and Greg Nasty. Food and beer options were great and they added cocktail and wine choices. Very fun - would/will(?) do again.

Forgot to mention the older gentleman next to me asking me after Ozzy finished a pretty solid version of Fairies Wear Boots if that was a new song. He also asked me what I thought of Zakk Wylde compared to Tony Iommi.

Big Thief were great tonight. They didn't have Buck at their Schubas show and it was definitely a different dynamic. Much more noise and extended jammy sections. I would've liked longer than the hour they played, but certainly know complaints for a free show that good.
I didn't watch more than a song or two of Overcoats. They sounded fine, but it's not a very engaging set and I'm not a huge fan of their writing. They're at Space tomorrow if anybody wanted to see them tonight but couldn't.

That's fair. They probably should move stuff up to 6 if they're gonna give the openers an hour.

Yeah definitely go see Roger Waters this time around. Great set list and he played all of the new songs in a row so they didn't drag.
Really picked up in the second set when he built the factory and brought out the Trump pig. Also ending with "Brain Damage" -> "Eclipse" -> "Comfortably Numb" all with a giant laser pyramid is everything I could have wanted to see. Check that one off the must see list

Galactic Empire -- a Darth Vader, Storm Trooper, Red Guard, Tie Fighter Pilot, and Boba Fett cosplayer playing all the Star Wars theme music in the style of power metal ballads --
was fantastic tonight. what a wonderfully funny and yet perfectly tight group. fun drunk times

PJ Harvey was very good. As performers, her and her band are top notch. Setlist was strange... she flipped To Bring You My Love and Down by the Water which had me really worried that she had cut the latter, and she put Community of Hope after that to play it with a gospel choir (which also sang on River Anacostia). The encore really cemented the show with Highway 61 Revisited and The River. If I'm honest, I'm pretty squarely a fan of the older PJ material and really went to put her in the trapper keeper knowing this tour was light on those (and that's probably gonna be the case going forward in general). That encore put a big smile on my face.
However, let me rant about fucking concert crowds. This show was $50+fees, yet people were more interested in talking about fucking Game of Thrones. I started up not too close but in the mid section (barely got there in time because I was at a nice dinner with my mom) and people were talking some random bullshit so I moved back. Then I got these two dudes who talked about their GoT fan theories for the last 45 mins of the show. I had to ask them right before the encore to hold their convo until after the show and they only kinda did. Had a good time in spite of it but man was it ridiculous. Kinda starting to feel like not going to future Summer Stage shows if this is what I can expect in future.

Oh, also, I had no idea Mick Harvey was touring with PJ. A cool thing for me as a huge Bad Seeds fan.

he's worked with PJ on a few albums before so it made sense -- i had no idea Alain Johannes (Them Crooked Vultures, Desert Sessions, etc.) was playing guitar for her now, or did some for the latest album. that was awesome.

This is gonna be one of the most candid concert reviews on this board.
So, Ride was great tonight but it was an existential experience. Truth is, I'm not in a great headspace. I haven't been for a little while, but today has been particularly bad. I won't get into the details but it made this show like nothing I had ever experienced. I had a few mental panic attacks, spaced out for like 10 minutes at a time here and there, and was just completely comatose as sound drowned over me. The second the music started I knew it was going to be quite a thing. But I think this all made the concert even better? It made it an experience I won't forget at least.
Band was good but honestly I was so far gone that I can't comment too much. At one point, the lead guy was like "there are so many of you out there when the venue was, at best, 1/3 full. I'd wager 400 people were there, 500 if I'm being generous. It was really really sparse, and I kinda felt bad for them. Not being in a sold out crowd for once this summer was refreshing, though. Brooklyn Steel is prob my favorite venue in the city now and it was extra nice having breathing room.

Julie Byrne was great last night. She was accompanied by violin and synthesizer, and occasionally background vocals from one of the openers Joannah Walker, and it was gorgeous.

yeah that was a wonderful show, the ambience really worked well at schubas. at the end i found myself wishing she'd played more songs, but i think she did play for like a full hour about so that was good at least.

Yeah, it was an hour. I would've liked an encore, too, but I was also pretty drunk and ready to go home.
In related news, this hangover is not particularly fun.

The Sufjan Planetarium show was fantastic as expected. Hollywood Forever is a gorgeous place to se a show, vsound was really great too.
Setlist was obviously all from the Planetarium album, it was rhe four guys, plus two string players and three horn players. Sufjan was especially chatty last night too.
For the encore, they did Somewhere Over the Rainbow, and the Bpwie Space Oddity cover they did recently too. Great show.

So today (or yesterday, rather, as it is past 2:30am where I am) I went to Lollapalooza Paris. It was really kind of wonderful. There were so many food options--my meal was from a stand that was run by a Michelin-starred chef, Jean Imbert--as well as drink options. LOTS of different varieties of wines and beers. Lots. Like, there were the standard tents like what we have at Lollapalooza, but Lollapalooza Paris also had a dedicated cider hall, wine hall, and beer hall. Each of those had really cool seating areas for people to just chill.
I didn't really spend too much time watching bands because I was busy wandering around and checking things out most of the day. I was on the rail for Abel, though, and he put on a good show, with the exception that he started late and ended early on a one and a half hour headlining slot.
I kinda wish we had the urinals over here in the States. It'd make the potty situation a lot easier, I think.
Leaving the fest was disorganized as fuck. I'm really tired, so I'll leave it at that.
I guess this trip to Paris is pretty decent. Have eaten some great food, seen cool stuff, got a new tattoo. Two more days...

Hans Zimmer.... once in a lifetime experience. One of the greatest shows I've ever seen. Three hours of pure bliss as films I love came to life through music. Speechless. Having one of the best seats in the house at Radio City didn't hurt either.

Macca put on a great show as usual, but I must admit some of it is getting a bit stale (mostly the banter). I set a new record for the most amount of time it's taken me to get to Tinley, just under two hours. That venue still has a firm grip on being my least favorite in Chicago(land). I must be a bit of a masochist though because I guess I'm going back there on Saturday, although weekend trips down there are generally much easier.
In short: Paul still rules, I cannot believe how well he can still perform at 75.

Macca put on a great show as usual, but I must admit some of it is getting a bit stale (mostly the banter). My recollection of his banter at Roo was that it felt like someone telling a long winded joke, but instead of having a punchline there were several big name musicians shoehorned in. Great set apart from that.

Caught the double header of Violent Femmes and Echo & the Bunnymen last night at the KC Crossroads (outdoor venue).
I've seen several shows there - Wilco, Cake, Bob Mould, and way back in 2008 saw The Black Keys before they became lame. It's a sizable venue, and this show was nearly sold out which kind of surprised me.
Standard shows on this tour have had Echo open, then finish with Femmes, but last night they switched it and I think that was a good call. Despite fewer people know Echo songs, the performance was better. Femmes went on right at 8, and blazed through a 15 song setlist that included the classics - Blister, Kiss Off, Gone Daddy Gone, and encored with Add it Up. The buddy I was with was a huge Femmes fan, whereas I'm just a casual one (basically the first album, and that's it) but he damn near shit his pants over them playing Color Me Once from the Crow Soundtrack, which they haven't done in awhile I guess. Rest of their set was pretty tepid though, and I caught a glimpse of a black security guard (probably the only non-white person in the entire venue) during "Black Girls" and he had the most hilarious look on his face like "fuckin white people." Nothing too special about the Femmes, they sounded great, did a bit more improvisations, but for the most part a fairly straight forward performance. New material live is boring tho.
Echo pulled a Maynard, stayed entirely shrouded in brooding shadows for the whole show, with a neon purple backdrop. they sounded tight, almost identical to studio recordings. The first half of the set was almost entirely Crocodile material which was awesome, the rest was a few plucks here and there from the rest of their 80s catalog - played White Moon and the Cutter naturally - before wrapping up with Lips Like Sugar. Overall a great set, a great night. I'd recommend the show to anyone who's a fan of either band, and while the Femmes had more charisma, the Echo show was more interesting.

Last night in KC:
Echo & The Bunnymen were fantastic. Ian McCulloch sounded great. Violent Femmes were really good, but while I was enjoying "Country Death Song" and "Waiting for a Bus" the people who only came to hear "Blister in the Sun" talked endlessly. The opening act was Eva Medoza. A weird singer-songwriter solo act that played mostly instrumentals that ranged from bluesy-rock to shoe gaze using live loops. Guitar-wise she was very strong. When she did sing it was horrible.
Both headliners played for 1 hour each, so their setlists were a little short but mostly enjoyable.

IRT Timbo: That was the biggest crowd I have ever seen at Crossroads. I was also going to mentioned the lighting during Echo. But, I always thought that was a problem with the venue. Very little lights in front of the stage.
