So, first it's worth noting that I got there around 6:20, meaning the place had been running for over 5 hours by that point. Wanted to get there earlier but my friend who came with got help up.
First impression was not good. Hanger was packed with people, with beer tents against one of the walls... nine tents, each for a different brewery. There are supposed to be over 40 here. Half of these stalls are out of beer at that, and the other half have lines that go halfway into the crowd for the music making them nearly impossible to stand on. We get to the front only to find you need to bring a cup around with you, so we go to get cups only to find out they're out of cups and we're given coffee cups for beer. I was pretty pissed and wrote my first message around then. Also tweeted about it, only to have someone following the hashtag or something respond and tell me there were more breweries downstairs.... which was great, but there was nothing directing people to them. A staircase was tucked away in a corner of the hanger and I would honestly have never seen it if not for that tweet. It's about 7:30 at this point so I went down there and found most of the breweries out of beer. It's the end of the day so I kinda understood, but still disappointing. I was still able to have a good selection of beers and given that I was here for free I couldn't complain too much, but they really did not seem prepared.
Bathroom situation was okay. When we walked in there were *massive* lines, but it thinned out after Built to Spill. Food situation was bad... two food trucks and both were pretty much out of food by the time we got there.
Missed part of Built to Spill but they closed with The Plan -> Carry the Zero so I got what I wanted. Guided by Voices, who I really didn't know outside of 2 songs before this, were a fun live watch. Didn't realize how old the frontman was (especially considering the rest of the band being younger) but he's awesome. Can't say I'll remember much of it because I drank a lot in a small period of time right beforehand. Sound at the hangar is kinda shit but I expected that.
A lot of improvements they need to make if they do this again and maybe another venue would be better. Overall it was enjoyable once I was drunk, basically.
Also, I dropped my phone for the second time in my life here and my screen shattered. So that was fun. Luckily Apple is announcing new iPhones on Tuesday and they won't be out long after, and this is a 2 year old phone so I'm due for an upgrade anyway.

Mastodon was maybe the best out of the dozen times I've seen them so far. fucking amazing show.
fwiw they played 5 out of 7 tracks from Crack the Skye, and not even remotely in order. so y'all can conclude your stupid fucking debate even after i verbatim told you what it would be.
brain tentacles were also great.
had way too many cts beers but I'm not mad about it

Got to see an hour and a half of that Mastodon show (they were awesome, I was happy the setlist was so heavy on the new album), and made it over in time to the Bottle for Blanck Mass. That was seriously one of the loudest shows I have ever seen there, right up there with APtBS. Pretty great though, but I really don't know how anyone who didn't wear earplugs could walk out of there without hearing damage.

Hopscotch was pretty great this year, Friday night in particular. Run The Jewels > Future Islands > Protomartyr > Afghan Whigs might be my favorite night of music ever.
Speaking of Protomartyr, if they weren't my favorite band before this weekend, they are now. First time seeing them. They've never seemed as polished in videos I've seen so I wasn't expecting the level of greatness they displayed at Hopscotch. Pretty sure I heard at least four new songs, too. Also, pretty sure Joe Casey was speaking directly at me at different points throughout the set. Joe 4 prez.

Speaking of, at QOTSA on Saturday night there was a beachball going around the floor for the first few tracks. Josh then asked for it, crowd complied... then he grabbed a knife from the stage crew and tore it apart ("I didn't come here to play with your balls").
The band were good; setlist was heavy on the last three albums though we did get Avon and Lost Art which was a nice surprise. For what it's worth Burn the Witch and Sick Sick Sick dropped off the setlist but didn't really notice until thinking about it afterwards. Feet Don't Fail Me was a bit flat live, but all in all good show (depending on where your expectations lie). Buddy of mine who was hoping for more stuff off the first few albums was disappointed, but realistically one can't expect them to ignore their most commercially successful albums.

Thao solo last night was really fun. I guess she was making up for a date she had to cancel in the spring, but there was a nice crowd and they were surprisingly respectful for Lincoln Hall. It was cool to see stripped down versions of the Man Alive tracks and her stories behind some of the older songs. Great set.

I think I'm among the last on the board to see him, but Roger Waters last night was phenomenal. Thoroughly enjoyed hearing the music from Dark Side, Wish You Were Here and The Wall. Art direction was superb. And I loved hearing Jess and Holly from Lucius sing backup. They completely honored the source material while adding their own artistic flourish.

www.setlist.fm/setlist/father-john-misty/2017/capitol-theatre-port-chester-ny-43e22743.htmlSo, uh, Father John Misty just blessed me with a god-tier set. He played the set from the night before but went beyond his usual 20 songs with I'm Writing a Novel, In Twenty Years of So, and freaking Leaving LA. Played for 2 hours 10 minutes. And it was a religious experience (irony). Best performance of the 11 I've now seen him give. The strings/horns and production values-- along with a more larger than life performance than I've ever seen him give-- really takes his already stellar show to the next level. If he continues to grow then I could see him being able to hold down a headlining spot at a Pitchfork-sized festival on the next album cycle because he's clearly ready for it. Ideal Husband was the only thing missing, but honestly the slow encore build to the explosive climax during Holy Shit couldn't be followed up. I actually respect him keeping it off here. I've seen him play that song plenty as it is. This was my first post-Pure Comedy show so I'd rather have Leaving LA if I had to choose. And it feels like a long time since I saw I'm Writing a Novel so that was a nice throwback. I'm rambling, but easily one of the best shows I've seen this year. He's a legend. He may be in my top 10 all-time favorites at this point, no hyperbole.

I'm not sure how he doesn't play In Twenty Years or So alongside Magic Mountain every night because the transition between songs was so seamless I barely noticed it.

Of Montreal was really good last night at the Logan Square Auditorium. Sound kinda sucked at the venue so hopefully they return to the Metros and Thalia Halls of the world next time around. A ton of people there too, which was great to see since they tour constantly and it was a weekday night.

I was there. That was my first one of those. Definitely didn't know enough to appreciate how good it was at the time.
They went downhill pretty hard after that although some of them were good.

Yeah, some of those big city radio station fest lineups from the 90's are bonkers. And probably cheap - the first year I went to Pointfest ('97) in St. Louis there were 2 separate fests 10 days apart, 1 ticket for both of them was around $25.
1st one - Offspring, Social D, Matchbox 20, L7, Bloodhound Gang 2nd one - Beck, Better Than Ezra, Rollins Band, Local H, The Verve Pipe

Saturday: The Dinosaur Jr./BTS show was a lot of fun. BTS only played about 45-50 minutes, which was a bummer. I was hoping for more, but they sounded great and I liked the setlist. Randy dedicated 'Twin Falls' to his mom. V cute.
Dino Jr. were awesome. They did all of You're Living All Over Me, Lou did a couple of solo songs, and then they closed with the "hits." It ended up being a solid hour and a half set.
Sunday: HIGHLY recommend checking out the OCs on this tour if they're coming through your town. The dual drummer setup is incredibly effective and the new songs rip live, particularly 'Animated Violence.' They only did two of the psychier tracks, which made for a nice break considering they played for like an hour fourty-five without stopping. I left towards the end of what they said would be their last song so I don't know if they did an encore, too. Great set.
And s/o Mookie for making sure I got there for Ganser who opened and were very good. They're a local band and it seemed like they had lots of family/friends in the crowd. I'll definitely look for their other shows around the city.

First time seeing Sheer Mag tonight. Short set, maybe 12 or 13 songs and unfortunately they were billed last on a shitastic local lineup. Strokes rip off band and some other quasi-punk poseurs. I digress...
Sheer Mag were excellent. High energy. Tight performance. Guitarists family was in attendance (like 11 people) all decked out in Sheer Mag t-shirts. Pretty cool. My complaint (minor) with the new album is still present here. The material from their EPs is fire, no pun intended with reference to Fan the Flames - the highlight of the night and my favorite cut from them. Their lo-fi garage pop just feels more natural than the polished feel of the new one and it's evident in their performance.
That's not to discredit the performance tho, as Meet Me In the Street kicked off a great show and was a choice opener. I was amazed at how similar they sounded to their studio recordings. Basically if you dig them on record, their live show will not disappoint.
Overall I enjoyed it, and it makes me want to give the debut album some more spins.
