And some of Black Wizard's riffs were cool, but most of their songs were identical. They seemed like cool dudes, but I stayed for like 25 minutes and that was enough.

Tool was pretty darn great last night at Pine Knobb. It's been about 16 years since I've last seen them. Extra bonus: they played on my anniversary, so it was a great way to celebrate for the lady and me. Tool is one of her all-time favorites. Negative points to the drunk guy behind us screaming "WOOOOOOO" consistently in our ears through the first three songs.

We went to the U2 show at Soldier Field on Saturday. I was worried in the days leading up to it that we were going to get thunderstorms, but Saturday turned out to be perfectly clear. I was also very unhappy with the ticket I originally purchased on Ticketmaster (300 level allllllll the way in the back - literally one row from the top). I saw resale prices dropping for some side stage seats I liked, so I listed ours for the same price on StubHub. Our original tickets sold within five minutes on Friday night which allowed me to grab a set of 200 level tickets on Edge's side of the stage. We couldn't see the giant screen at all, but we could see the band perfectly and I was very pleased with the upgrade. If I can snag cheap seats for one of their NY dates at the end of June, I might do that to get the full screen experience.
The show itself was fantastic. Bono's voice sounded great on the old material and I was particularly thrilled to hear them perform "Bad". Joshua Tree was excellent and though the crowd lost their fervor during the second half of the album, I really enjoy hearing "One Tree Hill", "Exit" and "Mothers of the Disappeared".
Side note: If you're planning to drive to a Soldier Field show (e.g. Metallica or Coldplay) and looking to tailgate beforehand, I highly recommend the SW Facilities at 18th Street Lot. My sister-in-law splurged on it since we were driving in with them from the suburbs and it was very chill and convenient. Couldn't have been more than 50 cars in the lot and only a few other tailgaters. Plenty of space to spread out and pre-game before the show. Best of all, we zipped out after the concert ended and we were on the Stevenson within a few minutes. A co-worker who was there had a nightmarish time trying to exit whatever lot he parked in.

(getting the vip perks and soundcheck and q&a session didn't hurt either, heh)

John Moreland at Bowery Ballroom on Wednesday night was very good. His set pulled heavily from Big Bad Luv, though "Latchkey Kid" was conspicuously missing. I was also a little bummed that he didn't play with a full band. That said, the one dude on stage with him did a very nice job embellishing the songs with acoustic guitar, electric guitar, keyboards and harmonica. In fact, I was surprised at the high level of appreciation from the crowd for his chops. The crowd was also (mostly) non-talkative, even in the back of the room.
Shockingly, this was my first show at Bowery Ballroom and it certainly met my expectations. Sightlines and sound were both excellent. The downstairs bar felt very familiar, but I'm certain I haven't been in the main room before. Made me think that there must be another venue in New York with a nearly identical set-up downstairs, but I can't place what it is. Or maybe it's just my mind disintegrating as I age.
Will Johnson opened up the show. It was great to see him for the first time since Centro-matic's farewell tour 2-1/2 years ago. I prefer his full band material to his acoustic renderings, but he gave a fine performance that was well-received by the attentive crowd. Seeing Will made me really pine for a Centro-matic reunion, though. I always knew I loved them, but I never realized how much I would miss them after they were gone.

That was a great show. Having seen them play the Pot twice already I still wish we got something else but I won't complain too much. That venue still sucks an incredible amount though.

love john moreland, one of our okies. i think he lives in okc now? or maybe tulsa, not sure. he's played here so many times, and i'd never seen him.
but i saw him do an in-store at a local record shop a few weeks ago. free local beer and a free show? why not?

i figured he would still be performing stripped down once i saw the thalia show was GA seated. rango let me know he's got the utility member with him which is cool, but yeah was hoping for a band since the arrangements on big bad luv are top notch.
still planning to go unless i get some feist ticket somehow

modest mouse last night were fantastic in okc. 3rd time to see them, and got to hear a few songs i'd never heard live before (night on sun, cowboy dan, grey ice water). for whatever reason, they love the venue they play here, which is pretty much a low-ceiling sweatbox of an aluminum building in the middle of nowhere that holds maybe 700 or so? anyway, they sounded great and were having a good time up on stage.

dead now but made my friday work exactly how i wanted.
got to northerly in time for thrice (what a shit fucking venue, btw. already saying no to getting a sturgill ticket later on. fuck that place) and was out right after deftones finished and got to subt within 20 minutes or so, just as helms alee started and then came home after mutoid man finished.
all 4 sets were great. thrice was way too short tho. deftones basically did a headlining set and it was maybe one of my favorites they've done in a while. helms alee played way longer than expected and im not mad about it. mutoid man was a hoot and also beat the piss outta pinata on stage because why not.

I saw Elvis Costello and the Imposters last night. Never seen him play before.
Surprises: Elvis was the only (six-string) guitar player on the stage. I knew he played but I didn't realize he carried the band. And, his guitar solos were pretty good. Geat band, too.
Setlist: Was pretty good. He was playing Imperial Bedroom in its entirety. So, deep tracks that I wasn't too familiar with. He also played the hits. He played about 25 songs.
Best part: I won my ticket through a Facebook venue contest.

Sounds great. Stubhub tickets are cheap for his show here on Monday so I'm pretty excited to see him for the first time.

Future Islands on Friday here in Indy was ridiculously good. He's got some weird dance moves, but there is just so much energy. Also his voice is fantastic.

Modest Mouse was really good Friday night in STL. Played a bunch of great tunes I was hoping to hear, including 'Float On', which made my girlfriend happy. They opened with 'Gravity Rides Everything' and 'Dramamine'.

First time seeing Glass Animals last night and they played a fantastic set (albeit pretty short). Don't think I'd want to see them at Lolla (or other fests) unless they had a night set ... the light show would definitely be missed in the afternoon.

What didn't you like about Northerly, Wretcht? part of it was definitely just the expectedly shitty crowd for a sold out buttrock show (saw a dozen fights break out and people carrying friends out from heat exhaustion with no security or medical teams in sight,) but i didn't think the venue helped matters with lack of bathrooms, beer vendors literally walking through the front of the pit during sets and causing even worse congestion (not forgetting that literally anything liquid was at least $15,) the bottleneck in and out of the main area -- which couldn't have even been peak time since i got there later and left early so who knows how it was when gates opened and closed. also the distance to said venue but i mean that can't really be helped and is on me, but it certainly didn't make the uber situation any easier. overall i probably overreacted that night but it's definitely still at the bottom half of my list for chicago venues. maybe it's better at smaller shows? idk. separately, shout out to the boardsperger commentary on my fb all weekend with all these shows going on. top notch work, guys

That said sightlines and sound are generally very good, and having the skyline in the background is really cool IMO. It's not perfect, but it could be so much worse.
