Phish Show #5: 2024-08-31 - Dick's Sporting Goods Park - Commerce City, CO
No novel today - last night was a bit patchier for me than the first two nights, and I was ridiculously tired. I had kind of a weird time finding a seat before it started, and then ended up relocating to a more comfortable spot / worse sightline, so I missed everything Kuroda was doing for Set 2. Sounded great though! I was like "man I'm feeling lazy enough tonight that a Farmhouse or a Bug would go down pretty smooth" so I was pleasantly surprised to hear the latter in the encore (even though I know it's a groaner - pro Bug here). Highlight of the entire evening was Trey quoting some Moving in Stereo during Kill Devil Falls. Would not have had Crosseyed and Painless on my bingo card for the weekend.
Still looking for my Mike's Song, and would love to hear some more stuff from Rift tonight (My Friend My Friend, Horn, It's Ice). Predicting a big Tweezer (kind of have it in my head that they'll open with it?) and hoping they do something silly for their last show of the tour.
Edit: $12 chicken tenders + fries for set break; this may be the only passable option at dicks for my money. The layout of the concessions is brutal - each stand has hot dogs, nachos, pretzels, and one single unique menu item unavailable anywhere else. I walked the entire concourse to see what they were…meatball sub, pizza slice, tendies, tacos, loaded nachos, burger. Tonight might be burger night idk.

I think these write ups have convinced me to bite the bullet and travel next year for a run unless they happen to finally come back through Texas again

One of these years I’ll pull the trigger. Seems like a Colorado-requirement these days, but also I have zero friends willing to attend something like this with me.

Phish Show #6: 2024-09-01 - Dick's Sporting Goods Park - Commerce City, CO
The dust has settled after a wonderful weekend at Dicks. The fourth and final show was another excellent performance and surprising setlist! I was slightly fatigued going solo for a third night in a row...on Night 2, I got in really early and randomly ended up by a group of other solo riders and we had a good spot together. Night 3, I got there a bit later and got a lot of weird "you can't sit with us, dude" attitude. I'd read ad nauseum about tarpers / seat-savers, etc., but man it really bums you out to be a party of one with nothing but a water bottle strapped to your belt and be told there's no room at the inn, when a solid 30' of seating is visible. In hindsight, I think I really let it get to me on the third night and enjoyed myself less. On Night 4, I basically said fuck it and told people where I was sitting as opposed to asking, for the first set. Worked out great and no feathers were ruffled!
Dog Log into Runaway Jim made it feel like it was gonna be special right off the bat. I was kinda surprised to hear Moma Dance after they opened Mondegreen with it, and it ended up being one of the only real references to Mondegreens that I caught through the whole fest (unless there were a ton that went right over my head). On Night 2, I found a sticker with OJ and Nicole on it that said "MY FRIEND, MY FRIEND" on it so I was ecstatic to hear that one on this run. Tube doesn't excite me at all, but Fluffhead, Stash, and Life Saving Gun to close the first set is about as perfect as a half-hour of Phish gets. Damn!!!!
During set break I moved up to the concourse and elected to watch the entire second set from the dead-center of the back of the bowl, standing above the seats. Amazing perspective and would likely get to Dicks earlier in the future to sit there comfortably for a full night. So far, this set break has the distinction of being the only one I haven't eaten during. We did a huge family barbecue before I drove down to the show, and frankly the offerings at Dicks are not worth the money. I met a guy named Jay who told me stories of shows he'd seen since 1996, and a guy who introduced himself as Black Hagrid, and also told me I was not allowed to call him that (after I'd already called him that).
Prince Caspian gently opened set two, which was otherwise a bit of a middling dud to me. The jams were "good" but other than a pleasantly dance-y Tweezer none of them were pushing me to move, or inspiring much introspection. The Howling was fun, and I used to really like More even though people seem to constantly shit on it - and now I can kinda see why lol. Boring crap song that I think they think is better than it is? Character Zero on the other hand is much better live than people give it credit for; Phish should be allowed to play simple songs with no inclination to jam. Slave to the Traffic Light seemed inevitable at some point over the weekend with how hard they were hitting it, so it came as no surprise as the closer after Zero.
What DID come as a surprise was Sabotage opening the encore - Dicks going absolutely crazy on this one. I had moved to the SRO part of the concourse on Page's side, to position myself to get out of the venue easier after the encore, and the view down onto the floor was incredible while everyone went nuts. Tweezer Reprise is such a perfect end-credits song - made leaving feel right.
I learned a ton about what and what not to do for a Dicks weekend, but ultimately felt like I showed up extremely prepared. I would probably not do it again solo, but also wouldn't rule it out. The GA structure of the event is actually less-conducive to enjoying it on your own, because there's a real element of banding together in the seats when the doors first open. That's probably just as avoidable by going early as it is by going with a group, but I guess when I got down about it I was the only one there to pick myself back up. Phish helped.

Idk if I realized you were rolling solo - that's a long run to do by yourself.

I knew family was going with me on the first night, and there was a chance of them attending Saturday too but it ended up not happening. I am no stranger whatsoever to attending any size show on my own, but 3 in a row got a little lame.

The GQ article was quite good, I thought. Maybe not a lot we didn't know but interesting just the same.

i cant wait to try the famous chicken sandwich from section 119 Uninteresting observation: I think the biggest shift in Phish crowds in the last 15 years is that people eat way more now at shows. I feel like I never used to see people eat. Saw a normal sized dude at NYE last year eat four ice cream helmets. It was mesmerizing.
