I doubt it's as much as Outkast. My guess would be a max of 10 North American fests.

Oh and apparently Boston Calliing dramatically increased their prices for next year so I'm sure Eminem is still cashing a big check.

i could see him doing the big 4 plus OSL, Firefly, and Sasquatch if that's still a thing.
if it's not the same weekend as lolla, Reading/Leeds makes a lot of sense too with the demo they're going for nowadays.
edit: BC too, apparently

Sure, there's lots of reasons fests would book him, but you could say the same about any #1. They're all expensive, but he can't demand the same price as 2014 when he was an 'interesting' booking for Lolla and set it apart (despite the fact he was there 4 years earlier). All these fests are competing for our dollars, and if Eminem is at all of them then there is no differentiation between them, which is exactly what they all want for their #1.

Well at least Arbee will be happy that fests are booking a rap act he cares about

I thought Beyonce was there to confuse all the folks on the internet who love Beyonce but want to boycott Coachella because the promoter is a homophobe or something

I get what you're all saying, and it all makes sense, but I still can't remember an act who was #1 at Lolla, Bonnaroo, Firefly, Boston Calling, Gov Ball and #2 at Coachalla (though pretty close to the #1). Festivals share #1's, but I don't think it's ever been as egregiously homogeneous as this. And I can't see any of these fests downgrading him to anything lower than #1.

I'm really surprised by The Weeknd, but not by anything else. Also, I don't know this is as expensive as you guys are saying. Last year was planned to be Radiohead / Beyonce, and I don't think that Radiohead is that much cheaper than Eminem. Same with the year before, we were worried about the undercard given how expensive the GnR reunion was rumored to be, and the lineup was great. I don't imagine the LCD reunion was that cheap either, and Calvin is pretty damn expensive too. Also, Coachella literally grossed 114 MILLION last year. They can afford to book some acts.

True, however, not all festivals sell out. With that in mind, most festivals try to book a 1 or 2 act that is an exclusive get to attract that money over to their event (especially when considering the higher tiered ticket options that the rich folk buy). Also, broken record here, but festivals don't make all their coin on ticket sales. There's monster dollars to be had on streaming sponsorships, regular sponsorships and merchandise sales and exclusive acts move money on that front.

I don't think sponsors will be upset at C3 for booking Eminem again. As for exclusive acts for the big 4 this year there only was U2 at Roo, Beyoncé -Gaga at Coachella and Arcade Fire at Lolla. I'm not including Radiohead since they hit several fests in 2016.

Just looking at last year:
Bey/Gaga Jay-Z The Who Chance The Rapper U2
were the #1s at the largest majors. Seems Lolla was the one who didn't have one (but likely did with Kanye at first and did have a local artist headline the whole thing).
But yeah, there are years (IE- 2016) that you see tons of shared headliners for sure. Hell, maybe Chella is the one that continues to try and book exclusive #1s?

Is that ice rave in Canada still a real thing? Hey does anyone remember that thing some beer company (Molson probably?) did back in the 90s where they put on a concert in the Arctic Circle? I think the lineup was Metallica, Hole, Veruca Salt, and Moist.
