yeah we're seeing at again tomorrow. i mostly wanna be able to hear all the dialog this time. first time had a lot of fans (us included) reacting loudly to everything on screen so i couldnt hear all the punchlines.
are we okay diving into spoilers if we tag them yet? it seems like everyone in my office was able to see it this weekend so i can finally talk about it out loud

I don't know why we were even avoiding spoilers here in the first place. Isn't that why we have a separate thread?

my theory is not a difficult theory because again with an exception of the raccoon everyone who wasn't evaporated were all teh epople you would assume would be dead and everyone who did evaporate is gonna have a sequel
I feel like this movie wouldve been better if htey just made it GOTG 3 with Thor and then they go to Wakanda for 10 minutes

I dono where im gonna rank this but this was 2 hours and 40 minutes and I was not bored which is cool. I think alot of the holes people online are trying to poke into it are silly.
I do think that its kind of wild that they made a 2 hour and 40 minutes and like 2 hours and 30 minutes of it were irrelevant and than the last 10 minutes just sets up the next 2 hour and 40 minute movie but I also again was not bored.
Cap'n America looks very sexy with a beard and long hair and teenage groot is not as good as normal or little groot but when he did action it ruled.
Bautista and Dinklage were the MVPs of this one
Thanos is .... fine but a huge step back from the last 4 or 5 MCU villains but also hes been pirculating for so long that I can see why

The one big issue I keep going back to is that it negates the entire point of Thor Ragnarok... kind of negates GotG1's ending as well but at least that one was a while ago.

Heimdell got a couple quality moments in Ragnarok at least but never really got to shine (especially for being a big name actor.) Loki "dying" -- we'll see -- by Thanos' hand after repeatedly trying to side with the baddies is probably poetic enough so i'm fine with it. Thor makes a comment at one point that "half" his crew is dead so i dunno if they're gonna retcon that in A4 and point out that Valkyrie and the others managed to get out alive. there's apparently already a rumor out there that Tessa Thompson said she'd be in the next one. my only real beef isnt with the movie itself but with the obvious fact that the next one HAS to involve time travel. either ant man and wasp figure it out when they go subatomic, captain marvel goes binary, or the original avengers figure out how to retrieve the time stone. all of which is okay but then how far back do they travel and what do they do with it and then does that it start a new timeline or is it fixing reality or? i mean we can go back to the Game of Thrones thread for this debate but it just becomes very shaky ground very quickly.

overall though im just impressed at how well they balanced most of the characters (was surprised at how little screen time captain and winter soldier got tho) and their separate plots, while also maintaining a lot of humor but keeping the seriousness of the threat at an all time high. also, fucking starlord ruined everything. this is 100% his fault

I had only a few small issues with the film.
- Predictable Vision/Scarlet Witch ending. I knew he'd just use the Time Stone. - Thor going for the chest was silly but a call back to the comics, which I appreciated, but in the grand scheme made no sense. - I didn't like that Quill was an idiot in their most desperate time. I feel like the missed opportunity of the Silver Surfer swooshing in and missing from the comics was a better way to end the battle. Quill being a moron was kinda cheap. - Black Panther's minimal role, which I understand considering his film just came out, but he's barely in this. I wasn't the biggest fan of the BP movie, but I loved him in Civil War. - I didn't mind seeing Dinklage, but his voice was dumb.
Things that I loved
- Thanos. Disagree with rango, Thanos has been the best villain of the entire 10 years of films. This was his movie, and they did a great job on him. I loved that they changed his motive too, away from the Death worshiper and made it ... well.. make sense... in a crazy way. I was worried Brolin would not be up to task, but he did it really well. - The Red Skull. Love that we got some closure to that character. - Unpredictable. I didn't see Gamora's death coming. I didn't see Iron Man not dying. I didn't think they'd make this movie and actually have Thanos win in the end. I full expected him to get half way there. I love that all of the internet predictions were off base, and the trailer (which I have a coworker who is fuming about this) pulled the wool over our heads on a lot of things. - As great as an homage/adaption they could do with what they have. So many characters to balance, and they did it just like out of the pages of the original source material, albeit with some juggling. Sure its the Silver Surfer who warns Earth about Thanos. But they pulled it off with Hulk. This was always gonna be a 2 parter, so I don't understand the criticisms of the finale. It's the same with Harry Potter's Deathly Hallows Part 1 and 2, Hunger Games, etc. They released the title a few years back, then realized their mistake and renamed it. The original IG story covered 6 full issues of battling, plus a 2 issue pre-cursor, and 4-6 issues across multiple books as tie-ins. I'm glad they didn't stuff it into one movie like Watchmen. Honestly didn't even feel like the length of the movie was an issue. I've sat through longer movies, and those weren't even half as exciting. - all the Easter eggs.
As far as what happens next, they filmed these back to back, so spoiler avoidance for the next year will be tough I bet. With the closure of the 20th century fox deal looming, I'd love to see them incorporate the Fantastic Four/Silver Surfer, but I don't think they will. They are saving them for the next phase I bet. Ant-Man and Wasp takes place before Infinity War on purpose, and so that leaves Captain Marvel. Until I see a trailer I'll reserve anticipation b/c I'm not familiar with the Carol Danvers version, only Mar-Vell. But they'll likely switch places, and have Danvers as an old nemesis of Thanos' (which is what Mar-vell was). Hopefully she doesn't get cancer. Gonna be a long year.

Honeslty, I think this is what they want you to think. I'm going with Nebula steals the gauntlet like in the comics and reverses everything. Not necessary time travel, but definitely using time as a device.

I wasn't the biggest fan of the BP movie, but I loved him in Civil War. - I didn't mind seeing Dinklage, but his voice was dumb. -i really liked how he showcased each stone's power individually though. power stone rips apart the ship. space stone creates portals. reality stone was a trick to trap gamora. time stone brings back vision. he hasnt really exercised the mind stone yet i dont think, which could make for some fascinating twists. i didnt have a problem with how they did vision like that. -i know i just trashed starlord but i did like that dynamic. he's already kind of an idiot but this time he's just in an emotional rage after nebula reveals that gamora is likely dead. it's so frustrating to watch because they're so close to winning but it makes total sense and i thought pratt nailed it. -yeah idk how i feel about wakanda in this one. it's never really fully explored why captain wants EVERYONE to go to wakanda to help heal vision or how thanos and the black order just know to go straight there to find the mind stone (after it was clearly established that thanos needed explicit instructions from gamora to find the soul stone) -dinklage was funny and i appreciated the twist of him being massive but yeah i didnt like the voice or the fact that it was literally just him in a wig. felt a bit clumsy on a production level

oh i also wanna pat myself on the back for calling Redskull a few weeks ago when rewatching Capt 1 and realizing that Redskull gets pulled in by the tesseract but clearly isnt dead. tying him in with a search for more stones and being haunted by the soul stone was so fucking perfect.
shame they couldnt get hugo to do it.

I've sat through longer movies, and those weren't even half as exciting. - all the Easter eggs. -Brolin as Thanos is the best thing they've done with this series. he's such a phenomenally well written character and portrayed by a great actor. im really glad half this movie was about him and how he came to be and why he's doing this. i suspect we'll find out some more motivations in the next one (im still not convinced Death isnt gonna play a role) -i so vastly applaud their balls to have Thanos win this one. i know he'll somehow lose in A4 but it's great to see a well-thought-out villain actually come up with a good plan and succeed for once and make the heroes suffer, if only so it breaks the monotony after 10 years of this formula. i thought both Brolin and Saldana were magnificent together. i wouldnt mind if Gamora came back to life just for more tension between those 2 and Nebula but it'd undo the great drama in her death. -i feel like im gonna need a pen and paper next time to catch all the hints.

Yeah Dr Strange is just playing forty chess, he says this 'failure' is the only way to win. Which is dumb because they COULD HAVE won if someone restrained StarLord. And double-dumb because time travel reasons.

i was under the impression strange allowed star-lord to rip the gauntlet off i need to rewatch that whole scene. now knowing that Strange knows the ending completely alters the perspective of that battle and how Strange is directing everyone around it. he clearly saw something that suggests that only Tony can figure out how to undo everything and therefore it was worth giving up the time stone to save his life. which is interesting because Tony (to my knowledge) never figures out any means of time travel in the comics so it'd give credence to Timbo's comment about that being misdirection.

I don't get how so many people are saying Thanos is better than Kilmonger, Loki, or Vulture. Or even Hela. Or Ego. I think there's a kernel of good characterization to Thanos but it is so weird to hear him be so literal about killing HALF the galaxy. I get overpopulation is his motivation but they bring up the very-specific 'half' so much it is bizarre.

I get overpopulation is his motivation but they bring up the very-specific 'half' so much it is bizarre. Loki is still my favorite but he's like half villain half anti hero half comedic relief (Hiddleston can be 150% all he wants fuck off) i liked Kilmonger's motivations more than most villains but i didnt think it was as fully explored -- granted that's partially cause he only gets 1 movie and Thanos collectively will have been in like 5. i really dont think Vulture is that interesting. Keaton is just a great actor and he and Tom had great chemistry together but the villain himself was w/e. Hela is fucking fun but she really just appears the second Odin dies and her whole thing is just "fuck my family i want the throne!" for no particular reason other than baddy. Ego was fucking dumb. i like Thanos way more for actually having well conceived plans and competent henchman, the ability to level any superhero (even before getting the stones,) the fact that he actually has some sort of feelings and real ties to emotion that make it difficult for him to do what he wants to do, and the fact that there's [horrendous, evil] logic behind what he wants. the "half" comment on who is dying is a little hammy but i appreciated that Thanos pointed out that it's entirely random and he's not being vindictive. and it wasn't so much about overpopulation as it was the wars and conflicts that arise from it, so in his head it's creating peace and understanding. it's a twisted logic but it's one that i liked more than the way other villains have spun it.
