Finished Alan Wake 2, and I gotta say it's one of the more unique experiences in gaming that I've had. I didn't realize that control and wake are a shared universe so that makes the aesthetic similarities make sense.
Great year for games.

Chants of Sennarr looks so sick, I wish I didn’t have such a backlog right now I'm going to get into Steamworld Build this weekend though. The text in Steamworld was waaaaaay too small for me to play so I went back to Gamepass and landed on Jusant which I know has popped up on a lot of year end lists. It has a feature I love that more games need to do - you can essentially make it just easy mode through accessibility options. It's a game about climbing and the controls are pretty involved but there were times when I was [] and just wanted to enjoy the scenery and you can make it so you just have to push the direction you want to go and the dude will climb without falling. Because of that I spent way more time with the game than I would have and am looking forward to finishing it. Tunic is another recent game that I feel like had the same thing - you could make yourself invincible, have infinite stamina, whatever without penalty. Every single player game should do that.

Still some year left but these are the games I rolled credits on for the first time in 2023. I wanna hear yours!
Dark Souls Dark Souls 2 Dark Souls 3 The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Resident Evil 4 Remake Resident Evil HD Resident Evil 2 Remake Resident Evil 3 Remake Bloodborne Spider-man (2018) Shadow of the Colossus Super Mario Wonder
Started but didn’t beat or are multiplayer games:
Death Stranding (actively playing and should beat soon, probably 2/3 done) Vampire Survivors (good and fun) Texas Chainsaw Massacre Starfield (fun at first but lost its charm quickly. Will probably beat?)
Big gamer year for me. Helps that I have two current gen systems and am only one system back for PlayStation.

Paid full price for the new Avatar game and honestly it’s a blast. You have to play it with a good sound system or a pair of headphones. The reviews don’t do it justice.

Games I beat this year:
Last of Us Part 1 Spiderman: Miles Morales God of War Uncharted Legacy of Thieves
Played a ton of Tears of the Kingdom and Last of Us Part 2 but I'm nowhere close to beating either game. Hoping for a price drop on Spiderman 2 eventually.

The one thing I never understood was encountering BTs. MULES, I get the idea of stealth takedowns vs actually killing. BTs, I almost always fail the stealth. Skill issue, I know.

I have done 0 successful stealth takedowns of the BTs. I’m sure it’s possible objectively but I’ve just been wasting them with the grenades

Giving Cyberpunk another shot and enjoying it much more. Still think the weakest part is the protagonist V but there's a lot to dig into so I'm content.

In (Board) games games games, Ticket to Ride Legacy: Legends of The West comes out tomorrow. The reviews look great but debating spending $120 just to play through it once. So my partner really likes Ticket to Ride so I bought this for her for Christmas. We exchanged gifts today and it got her really excited so that was nice We're debating though whether we want to just play it together or get a group of 4. We definitely have friends who'd be down to play, but I feel like it'll take us months to get together enough times to finish it. Everywhere I'm reading is saying 3-4 players is ideal though, even if the 2 player experience is still fun

I bet that would be a good time.

You’re in for a treat, especially the surprise at the end of Game 1. It definitely would be more fun/chaotic with more players but the added mechanics as you expand the map adds more strategy other than just placing train pieces down. As you get further into the campaign, games take a bit longer at around 60-90mins. Initial setup can be a bit confusing so watch this video: I’m probably going to pickup another copy when stock is back to normal next year.

I think we're going to just do the two player, I know us and we'll not want to wait on other people to play every time. We're starting it tonight, I'm excited Does that video avoid spoilers? I've been pretty good so far on avoiding everything I can

After 8 months of TotK, I decided I had played long enough and it was time to finish the main story and move on to other things.
I have had Alan Wake Remastered sitting on my PS5 for ages from when it was the PS+ free game. Enjoying it so far. Gameplay might be a bit repetitive? Just getting jumped in the forest constantly. I am appreciative of the little set pieces the throw in to mix things up. Atmosphere and narrative are all top notch and I say that as someone who thinks the story for nearly every game is stupid. I'll almost certainly pick up the sequel once I'm done.
Edit: the story in RDR2 is good.

After enjoying Ticket To Ride Legacy I picked up Pandemic Legacy since it's designed by the godfather of legacy games himself, Rob Daviau. After making it to May, I have to say that is one of the most stressful gaming experiences from a cooperative tabletop perspective. Nothing beats the dopamine of finishing up the story beats and opening the packages and dossier doors to equip new characters and upgrades.

Oh yeah, speaking of that we finished Ticket to Ride Legacy last week and had an absolute blast with it. Just did 2 players which I think was the right move because it would have taken way too long to do that with a group, by the end we were doing just one game a night. Thinking back I could definitely think of a couple ways to modify a two player game. I think the two player version would benefit from replaying some of the earlier games, so that more cards get punched and so you get to see more of the newer cards in the later games. I know that's less "fun" in that you'd be replaying without the new mechanics each round introduced, but we would have been plenty happy doing that and extending overall play time
I thought this while playing but I didn't want to mess up the flow of how the creators intended it to play, but now having played it I don't think it would have messed up anything
I think there was enough we didn't complete that I've been thinking about running one more modified session, play it out over 3-5 games, pick a new company, and each game do one mechanic we didn't finish. Like the treasure hunting one game, maybe do the rest of the circus tickets one game, stuff like that. Still lots of post cards and stuff we haven't touched and we have a lot of train routes that still don't have stickers so I think it'd be fun to go through all that before we transition into the "Ticket to Ride 1901" version thats meant for post game We've actually been looking into doing Pandemic Legacy next, we play the regular game sometimes. I might get that soon
