I remember there being a thread for soccer/football on the old board, and could swear there was one on here too, but couldn't find it. So I thought we could really use one, especially with the World Cup coming up (and the Champions League final on Saturday). Though the idea is for this thread to be for any and all conversation about my favorite sport.
My background is that I've been a Tottenham Hotspur fan for almost 12 years. Was always casually interested in soccer, but got super into the game at the '06 World Cup and afterwards when looking for a club team to follow was almost instantly drawn to Tottenham. I got a tattoo of the club logo 10 years ago and for about 9 years that was my only tattoo. I'm also generally a big USMNT fan and for the past year or so have been going to as many Detroit City FC matches as I can.
This summer's World Cup is a bit of a bummer for me, since my two teams (U.S. and Ireland) didn't qualify. And it's being held in Russia, which is pretty bad, but seems almost OK only because the next one is going to be in Qatar... which is somehow even more disgusting. At this time my only rooting interest is South Korea, for THFC reasons, but I'm sure once the tournament starts I'll pick a few temporary faves to root for.
Anyone more excited for this World Cup than I am?

No USA and it being held in Russia has me much less interested than any other World Cup. I’ll watch some games on the weekend, but I’m not going out of my to watch games during the work week. I will be cheering for Spain, Mexico and Iceland.

The locations and politics of these next couple of World Cups dampen my interest a bit, but I’m still so excited for the games.
I’m also super psyched for the Champions League final. We’re gonna be out of town, but I hope we’re not doing anything while it’s on.

I'm excited for it. I try not to let the politics of FIFA and all that crap get in my way of enjoyment. I tend to root for the countries that my family came from. Which means I will almost certainly be the only one here rooting for Russia (yes, it's a crappy country. Why do you think my ancestors left?). Also, England and Germany.

CL and WC pale in comparison to tomorrow's Fulham/Villa playoff final. Come on you whites!

I am also stoked for that one. It might be too much to ask to watch both, but I hope I can.

I seriously doubt I need to spoiler this, how many people are waiting to re-watch the EPL Championship Playoff Final... Congrats to the Cottagers on returning to the Premier League. Any match that results in John Terry being on the losing side is a good match.

Didn’t get to watch, but sounded like they deserved it.
In this one, the Ramos takedown of Salah was so shitty. I hope he’s ok for the World Cup, but it’s a huge deal for Liverpool who have been the far better team to start.

I just got home from work, so I didn't get to watch the Fulham/Villa game either, but as a neutral I'm pretty satisfied with the result. I just turned on the Champions League Final and feel like I didn't miss much except a couple injuries?

Couple of great chances for Liverpool, but the injuries have been he biggest news.

Gareth Bale. WTF. That was amazing.
Second half as a whole has been pretty great. Also, fuck Sergio Ramos forever.

Hahaha, a second absolute blunder from Loris Karius and Bale scores his second of the night. Madrid up 3-1 and now I can go make myself some food.
Here's the all-time wondergoal by Bale to give Madrid the lead back:

Yeah, that goal was incredible. Brutal game for Karius.

I love the sport, played it for years when I was younger and even refereed for a little bit, but I've never really followed a pro league for it. I kind of want to watch Champions League but I don't know if I have time to keep up with another sport. Then again I'm considering dropping American football
World Cup is always one of my favorite times but as others have said, no USA and happening in Russia makes it hard to get excited

Iceland is a super fun team and I'd love to see them do well. I'm pulling for Germany to win it all.

Two big pieces of soccer news this morning: 1. The U.S./Canada/Mexico joint bid was officially selected by the committee as the hosts of the 2026 World Cup. Also, the field will be expanded to 48 teams, which just sounds ridiculous to me.
2. Spain bafflingly fired their manager and hired a new one the day before the current World Cup. That’s so fucking crazy

Definitely doing a long vacation for that. Does anyone have a list of all the cities?

The uncertainty for taxpayers, coupled with FIFA's inflexibility and unwillingness to negotiate, were clear indications that further pursuit of the bid wasn't in Chicago's best interests.”
Good for them for telling FIFA to kick rocks IMO.

I'd be surprised if Denver wasn't on the final list.

I can't believe that ONLY Kansas City is going to represent flyover country.
Maybe Indy and/or Nashville?

Ah, didn't see that list. Surprised MN isn't on there with that new stadium, unless they didn't want to participate either.

I think it’s a terrible idea to expand to 48 teams. Happy that the World Cup is going to be in North America tho

As an Australian I'll consider it a huge achievement if we can make it out of the group stage. We obviously can't beat France on Saturday, but I think we can eke out some points against Denmark and Peru. If results fall our way it would be incredible for us to move on.
