No surprise there, La Azzurra squad is playing the best football so far. La Roja barely qualified, they miss such important names and they're playing quite poorly but still, they managed to qualify. It should be an interesting match between these two

Mrs. c1916 and I went to the UK for the last 3 games. Sat in quarantine for 6 days, had 7 Covid tests (4 PCR, 3 Lateral Flow) all to get into the games (we did other shit too, including two shows at The Globe, collected 3 Michelin stars, and any museum that would let us in...but the reason for the trip was the Euros).
We didn't really care who won, just looking for good games. Unfortunately, none of the three games was particularly "good." Italy/Spain was just awful, neither of those teams deserved to move forward. And the second half/extra time of the final was equally dull.
The overall atmosphere was wild, though, and I don't regret the trip. Worst part was getting off the train for the final to a mobbed station where someone had set off several flares. Took about 30 minutes to inch our way out while choking on the smoke. The Mrs. was not happy about that.
I think I've seen a possible glimpse of (nearly) scalper proof ticketing. UEFA put "pre" tickets onto an app on my phone the day before the match, tied to my passport. When I got to the stadium, I turned on bluetooth, brought up the app and the steward checked my passport. He then tapped my phone with some kind of wand that "read" the pre-tickets and turned them into actual tickets that then generated a QR code inside the app that was read by the gate scanner. The only way to scalp these was the fact that I had two tickets on my phone and they would allow me to transfer one to my guest in case we didn't arrive together. 4 separate checks (COVID first, then the UEFA ticket app, then the gate, then the metal detector) made for long lines. Needs work, but certainly better than wristbands or paper tickets.
Watching all the fence jumpers on Sunday night reminded me of the way mobs crash the gates at Lolla. Watching the police dumping them right back out forcibly was gratifying as well.
Were a bit worried leaving the final. The level of anger of the crowds going TO the game was off the charts. We didn't know what we'd get on the way home, but it was sad Brits, not angry.
Looking forward to the 2026 shared World Cup, but if tickets became available for Qatar or Germany in 2024, I'm all over it.
