We didn't have the budget for musicals (went to more of a football and shop class high school) but I also cannot sing so it was okay. My mom just sent me a newspaper clipping of when I was Marilla in Anne of Green Gables and my friend Liz was Anne, that might have been one of my favorite plays we did.

Didn't realize it at the time but senior year of high school I did yellow face for a production of "anything goes".
Related, I fucking hate musicals

I get it. You don’t usually learn about racism until college.

I get it. You don’t usually learn about racism until college. The kicker is that the director was like an ultra conservative southern baptist who hated me cause I said fuck a lot. Hindsight being 20/20 I should've just told her to fuck off but alas My theatre director was cool. She gave me a lot of candid feedback about my audition prep for college and saved my ass with an LOR that I swear tipped the balance in my getting in to a few programs. I don't think she does theatre anymore at the high school which is a bummer to think about

My "Theater for Non-Acting Majors" instructor at U of I was Sandra Marquez. She was really cool. Just saw yesterday that she is participating in a Steppenwolf's Pants Optional Soiree tomorrow. They listed 5 of the participants: Joan Allen, Gary Cole, John Malkovich, Laurie Metcalf, and Sandra Marquez. Pretty cool. She was lots of fun and taught me how to punch someone on stage without actually hitting them. She was in one of the strangest productions I saw at U of I (Kabuki Madea), which is saying something, given I dated someone who was part of an experimental dance troupe.

What are everyone’s “heavy rotation” cast recordings of musicals they listen to? I find myself returning to the 10th Anniversary concert of Les Mis pretty frequently, as well as the original concept album for Jesus Christ Superstar Hadestown and Dear Evan Hansen

I’ve listened to pretty much every major Les Mis recording and am kind of a snob about which ones I like, so I was a little nervous with what the new touring cast was going to sound like. We went in Milwaukee last night and it was easily the best live theatre experience I’ve ever had before. Maybe helps a little that I managed to get 4th row tickets right when it went on sale. Highly highly recommend seeing if/when it comes to your city

If you like Phantom and want to see its current iteration before they strip it down like they did the West End production that would be a must see. Beetlejuice is closing in feb as well and Alex Brightman was basically born for the role, would be worth going to for cheap since they can’t sell tickets for shit. Come From Away is also closing but I would rather have a root canal than see that one.

the grandson of the then head of the mormon church sublet my college apt. when I was home for a summer. if his extended family ever found out about his low level drug dealing and his disrespect for his own religion, they would not have been endeared about it.

Do you think they would’ve liked the show? There are a lot of extremely niche Mormon jokes in the show, it’s distinctly possible.

Do you think they would’ve liked the show? the grandson could have written it, but with more adult themes in it.

People who see theatre in Chicago: I would like to see West Side Story tonight before it leaves town. Looks like prices are around $100 which is fine but is there somewhere else I should be looking to perhaps score a deal?
Edit: have tried StubHub, SeatGeek, and Gold Star in addition to of course the opera house online box office.

Mrs ten15 saw WSS and absolutely loved it, by the way.
