I wanna start the Dead boot thread next week, but for the meantime... Emma and I have been making mulled wine and watching Star Wars all night. I've been listening to this on repeat all day - wooooooooooo

Happy 50th Birthday to the 2/18/71 Capitol Theatre show! Would recommend dipping into this one today, if you're unfamiliar. It features the debuts of tons of familiar tunes (Loser, Greatest Story, Playing in the Band, Wharf Rat), and features one of the best Dark Star jams, to my ear, the aptly-named 'Beautiful Jam' version. That whole Dark Star > Wharf Rat > Dark Star sequence is really spectacular. And then they launch into another fuckin' Me and My Uncle afterwards. Any Dave's Picks subscribers in the house? I'm finally getting around to my copy of DP37 today and it's awesome so far! It seems like April 78 is really getting some proper respect as an all-time Dead month, and this show is no exception. First disc highlight is Let It Grow - Jerry comes in absolutely HOT on the solo/jam.

I admittedly haven’t listened yet but I did get it. Last years releases were all exceptional I’m sure this will be no different

Some shows I've been visiting this week, presented in the format I keep on my Dead Log:
5/19/74, Portland, Portland Memorial Coliseum -- Found on: Relisten App + PNW Sampler -- Notes: Unbelievably good second set; Keith freaks it on Greatest Story, gorgeous Wharf Rat and a unique, elegant Peggy-O, leading into the GOAT Truckin’ that’s fiery throughout, ends on an MLB jam > NFA > Goin’ Down The Road. Fuck yea. I listened to this show after reading about Rick of Thoughts on the Dead's passing. He used to champion this Truckin' on Twitter as being the closest the Dead ever got to Led Zeppelin.
11/1/85, Richmond, Richmond Coliseum -- Found on: Dick’s Picks Vol. 21 -- Notes: A bit of a mess overall. Some really good first set moments, like Brent on Big River and the fast Jack Straw. Comes A Time is maybe the second best I’ve ever heard it (behind 5/9/77) and High Times is similarly gorgeous. And ya know, Space was pretty dark and interesting. But the other songs were just kinda there, and the closing covers were a little too off-the-rails (Gimme Some Lovin’ and Gloria).
3/14/90, Landover, Capital Centre -- Found on: Spring 1990, Relisten -- Notes: I've decided to embark on a listen-through of the Spring 1990 tour. I want to get to know some of these 80s/90s songs a little deeper, have heard and loved some shows in the run (3/24 and the one w/ Branford), and want to hear some mf'ing Brent, ya know? Anyway, this show was cool. Pretty hot out of the gate w/ good versions of Cold Rain and Feels Like A Stranger. Brent's blues song was actually fun and his Big River solo was, again, magnificent. Jerry's Row Jimmy solo was beautiful, but the lyrics are flubbed like *immediately* after. Second nice was nice but not as great. It has some weird sequencing with Jerry being somber (Black Peter, Black Muddy River) and Bob joining jester (Miracle, Lovelight). But the Black Muddy River to close was spectacular. Good show overall!

Spring 90 is surprisingly good, really caps off their best era from 85-89 imo.

3/15/90, Landover, Capitol Centre -- Found on: Terrapin Station Limited Edition CD + Relisten -- Notes: This show FUCKS. It’s Phil’s 50th birthday, and things take off with an excellent Althea, then “We Want Phil” chant into him nailing Tom Thumb on vocals. Brent kills the Jed solo and Cassidy is great; Terrapin Station is maybe the best I’ve ever heard it, with a spacey jam leading into a heavy Drums/Space. Wharf Rat > Throwing Stones was solid too, Jerry sounds good. Revolution is fun to close too.

Any of you dorks got a good April 27 show you'd recommend? Asking for a friend. I've had the "Bertha" from Filmore East 4/27/71 and would seem like an easy show to find on whatever that app is. But I'm curious what people's thoughts are

Just checked and I don't see anything on my log from 4/27, but they played a show on that date during the Spring 77 tour, so that's probably quality. That 71 Fillmore run is the truth tho, that's gotta be your best bet.

Latest installments from the Spring of 1990:
3/16/90, Landover, Capitol Center -- Found on: Archive; Spring 1990 set (plus the sampler album on Spotify) -- Notes: Let the Good Times terrific opener, Brent sounds great, Touch of Grey is energetic too; Amazing Bird Song > Blow Away, Brent and Jerry trade solos on Bird, and Brent's rap on Blow is great; Second set just good, Scarlet > Estimated from 90 set, Man Smart Woman Smarter > Jam > D/S is okay, definitely too much basic Bo Diddley beat for me to really care about it. Fun Sugar Mag set closer w/ Brent ripping the solo tho! Encore "The Last Time" was a total mess lmao, oh well, they tried.
3/18/90, Hartford, Hartford Civic Center -- Found On: Archive; Spring 1990 Box Set -- Good but unspectacular show; Jerry sounded a bit off all show; Shakedown opener ripped (but the tape has a huge AUD patch); TMNS outro is great w/ Brent and Jerry interplay; Iko to open 2nd set is really on-point and there's a nice Dew. Otherwise, this show was the weakest of the tour so far.

3/19/90, Hartford, Hartford Civic Cente -- Found on: Relisten; Spring 1990 Box Set -- Notes: Pretty great show! First set was on point throughout, great Bertha with excellent Jerry solos; good Jack A Roe and I actually liked Picasso Moon? Good jam to close it. Brent crushes It’s All Over Now. Show’s highlight was Foolish Heart, easily the best I’ve heard it. Fun Playin > Eyes to follow it, though they lost my attention during a meandering 20 minute space jam. Rest was fine, but Brokedown Palace was perfect as the encore. Beautiful, soulful rendition.
Ranking so far (w/ show highlight): 1. March 15 (Terrapin Station) 2. March 16 (Bird Song > Blow Away) 3. March 19 (Foolish Heart / Brokedown Palace) 4. March 14 (Big River) 5. March 18 (Shakedown Street - which, I found a Charlie Miller SBD version of w/o the annoying AUD patch)

3/21/90, Hamilton, Ontario, Copps Coliseum -- Found on: Archive, Spring 1990 Boxset -- Notes: Not my favorite show, sorry if this was your show, Bosma. Bobby seemed to go out of his way to either a.) choose songs I dislike (Victim, I Need A Miracle) or overly emote others (Minglewood, screeching on Estimated). Plus I'm really not a fan of the Charlie Brown womp-womp sound on Lovelight, let alone not being a fan of Bobby Lovelights. Show still had some brilliant moments, namely Jerry's delicate MS 1/2 Step solo and a tremendous group jam on Throwing Stones. The latter was prolly this show's highlight. Jerry closing with Knockin' on Heaven's Door was also inspired - he and Brent are haunting vocally here. We also got a good Standing on the Moon, one of my favorite latter-day Dead songs, but this version, while good, didn't reveal anything new to me. Overall, the show is probably second from the bottom so far.

How was the 87 show? Maybe I'll give it a spin on Archive sometime lol I didn't like it much, but the circumstances behind going contributed to that: long and tough week at work as a law clerk, last minute decision on a Friday to go right after work downtown, left office around 7 to get uic pavilion about 40 minutes later, still wearing work clothes (suit, tie, trenchcoat), bought a ticket for twice the face from a girl scalping it, seat way up in the balcony. People were impressed that we got a song from Phil (apparently up until then, Phil didn't get a lot of singing time at shows. The soldier field show, outside, instead of inside like the UIC show was, was much better.

3/22/90, Hamilton, Ontario, Copps Coliseum
-- Found on: Archive; Spring 1990 Boxset
-- Notes: Now this is more like it! Right when I was getting a little weary of the 90 tour, they pull me back in! *insert Sopranos gif* But yea, this show was excellent. Feel Like A Stranger was awesome off the bat - and the rest of the first set was solid. Interestingly, five tracks from the first set were used on the Spring 1990 sampler album, So Glad You Made It, but I wasn't really taken by any of the cuts they chose, save for Stranger. Once again though, I really enjoyed Picasso Moon. It's extremely of it's time, sounds like Bobby trying to be Loggins or something. But it's corniness is just endearing enough to me, and Brent is actually great on it. -- But the second set here, that's where it's at. I was not aware that the Scarlet > Fire on this show is so highly regarded (#3 all time on headyversion), so I was totally blown away. It's some of the best music I've heard the Brent-era Dead play ever. Seriously. The transition is fucking electric and I can't say I've heard a Fire played with so much intensity. Loved loved loved this. And the rest of the show held up! We got a rarity, with the final performance of "Believe It Or Not," a solid Jerry ballad. Then awesomely in-sync and similarly intense versions of Truckin and The Other One (with an okay D/S in between). The whole band is cooking on this show in such a great way, it makes me so happy to listen to. The last great track here is Brent taking lead on Hey Jude > Dear Mr. Fantasy > Hey Jude, which started off pretty rough, but was sublime for the last 2 sections.
Overall, great show! Probably second on the tour for me, just below the 3/15/90 show. Onward to the Knick!

3/24/90, Albany, Knickerbocker Arena -- From Archives (also Dozin at the Knick and Spring 1990) -- Notes: This show is basically perfect (albeit a 9-minute Walking Blues, but honestly that's the most tolerable Bobby Blues song). Kicks off with Brent wildin’ out on Help > Slip > Frank; perhaps the GOAT Loser; Brent is on point this whole show, highlights One More Saturday; an amazing Terrapin > MLB > Drums/Space > Wheel sequence, one of the best moments of the tour. MLB jam is particularly killer. Jerry goes apeshit on the Watchtower solo into a gorgeous Stella Blue, crowd singalong to NFA, and a benedictal We Bid You Goodnight. Def my favorite show from this run so far, though I have listened to this one before.

3/25/90, Albany, Knickerbocker Arena -- Found on: Archives, Dozin at the Knick, and Spring 1990 -- Notes: Another fun show! Def don't personally love it as much as Bosma or the Head consensus (it rocks a 4.82/5 on RL), but it's in the upper tier for the 90 tour. Greatest Story > Touch of Grey is a great opening sequence, but the first set highlight is the Masterpiece > Bird Song > Let it Grow sequence. Jerry's solos on the latter two are just sublime. Eyes kicks off set 2 in a great way, but the Crazy Fingers > Truckin > Spoonful > D/S > I Will Take You Home run didn't really capture me. Set peaks again with Goin’ Down the Road > Black Peter, love Jerry's solo on the latter. Fun singalong version of Mighty Quinn to close.

Doubled up today!
3/26/90, Albany, Knickerbocker Arena -- Found on: Archives, Dozin at the Knick, and Spring 1990 -- Notes: Great, brisk show. It clocks in at just over 2:15:00. Some cool first set song choices, i.e. a nice Dupree’s, Big River Blues, and alt-lyrics to Black Throated Wind. Row Jimmy is my favorite from the Brent-era, with lovely, moving solo sections. Was probably my surprise highlight from this show. Blow Away is dope too, easily the best Brent-led song. Also loved Built to Last, which turned out to be its final performance. China > Rider is short but awesome, hella underrated version, lots of energy. Bob's track are just so shitty this tour tho. Like, c'mon man - he gives us Victim or the Crime, Man Smart Woman Smarter, and I Need A Miracle in this second set. Jerry gives us China > Rider and Morning Dew. Get your shit together, Bob. Anyways, Morning Dew > Brokedown closer rips, unsurprising. The Brokedown maybe better than 3/19, I'll have to listen to them back to back and see.
