Reading Billy's book this week and diving into some classic primal Dead shows.
Spent this morning with 2/27/69, their first 16-tracked show and the source of Live/Dead's Dark Star and St. Stephen. Obvs those were killer, but the entire second set is fire. Jerry attacks Cosmic Charlie like it's the "Revolution" intro or something, and his leads throughout that track, The Eleven, and Lovelight are unbelievable. Lovelight in particular gets fucking wild near the end and might be the favorite version I've heard in a while. Also, I loved hearing Mountains on the Moon, it's a shame they never really added that to the rotation. Hearing that transition into Dark Star was really cool.
Now I'm listening to 11/10/67, one of the first shows they recorded for the Anthems of the Sun overdubs/whatever you'd call that. Alligator > Caution is a powerhouse, Phil just owns that song. Phil was also slaying the 15-minute Viola Lee Blues that opened the tape. Sound quality on Relisten was a little iffy, but it was awesome nonetheless. This show was rereleased in the last few years, would love to get my hands on a remixed/mastered version of that track.

At first I was going to say this was a stupid idea because it’s just going to be a bunch of people saying “Wow Cocaine Jones > Devil Boyz > Rippadippadoo was legendary just creamed my jeans” but it’s actually a really good idea and I’d give The Dead a shot.

Obviously the truth is lost in time but I’d bet money one of the boarders no longer with us called me something derogatory when I said I listened to the dead when I first joined.
You’re welcome, is what I’m saying here.

I hope he’s doing ok. It sounds like he very much enjoys being a dad compared to hanging out with us and I don’t blame him!

Ayy I'm extremely into this idea! Would love to have a more focused outlet / motivation for listening - and love the idea of starting a little tape trading circle of sorts. Woo!

Bosma's spot-on here. Europe 72 is a pretty perfect introduction. I'd throw Veneta, OR 8/27/72 on there as well. It's a little more aggressive and exploratory than the other big introductory Dead show, Cornell 77, but you can't go wrong with either.

And fwiw, I made this mix on a CD for my Dad earlier this year when he asked for an 'intro to the Dead' CD

also monasterys playlist does not include shakedown street so it is wrong! Lmao well.... You can find that track (and more!) on this separate playlist, Studio Staples, that I made when running through the Dead's studio discography during lockdown. The idea is that these are all songs that were live staples for significant chunks of time - that also have interesting studio versions. (Nothing else from that album tho, am not really a fan)

Late 60's are my second favorite era though
