3/28/90, Nassau Coliseum -- Found on: Archives, Spring 1990, Without a Net -- Notes: Solid but not spectacular show. Maybe I'm getting a little listener fatigued with this project, happy that the Branford show is coming up tomorrow! First set was fine enough, kinda low energy tho until Cassidy and Deal, the latter of which was the clear first set highlight. Second set was better - nice Foolish Heart and LLR, but Cumberland Blues was the show’s best moment, and jam, oddly enough. Outshined everything around it pretty easily. The Weight was fun too! Especially when Phil totally flubbed his verse, lmao. Wish they had given "Wait a minute Chester!" to Brent instead of Bobby tho. Hey Pocky Way > D/S was boring, sorry. I'm almost never interested in the Dead's New Orleans songs. I'd just rather be listening to the Meters every time. But Brent’s backing vocals on Wharf Rat killed, and saved the back half of the set. Revolution closed the show but was oddly sleepy. Much more Revolution 1 than Revolution, if ya know what I mean.

3/29/90, Nassau Coliseum
-- Found on: Wake Up To Find Out, Spring 1990 -- Notes: Finally - the Branford show! It's his first appearance with the Dead, and it's incredible how easily he slots right in. But the whole band was firing before he gets on stage - the opening run from Jack Straw > Bertha > We Can Run is excellent and energetic, especially Bertha. Branford comes on first to play Bird Song, and that performance is legendary, IMO. His solos and interplay with Jerry over the last five minutes are sublime. Probably my second favorite Bird Song, behind the standard-bearing Veneta. Also lol'd at Bobby deciding what the first set needed was a Chuck Berry cover immediately following that 13-minutes of bliss. Never change, dude. -- Second set - Branford stays on the entire time, and it rules. Eyes > Estimated is stunning, and it takes a lot for me to really like an Estimated. Then they rip into Dark Star, the first from this tour. Branford fits right into this mix, and they jam for 18-minutes, but then as if - god forbid - Billy and Mickey don't get their moment, the jam veers into a Drums/Space. And to their credit, it's easily the best D/S of this tour, and maybe the best Space I've ever heard? That's entirely due to Branford - he gives his sax a rougher, squealy tone than earlier, and plays the role of a lead instrumentalist throughout Space. Which, honestly, works best IMO, as Space is usually little more than background noise for me - especially when the crew is just dicking around with Midi effects. Jam pulls back into Dark Star > The Wheel, then closes with Throwing Stones and Lovelight, and this is definitely my favorite Bobby Lovelight. I think having Branford there to do the main melody allows or pushes Jerry into more creative territory, and the whole band brings energy to the track that I've rarely heard post-Pigpen. -- All in all, this show is fantastic. It was also one of my first late-era Dead shows I heard, and one that I come back to on a semi-regular basis. Not sure how it stacks up in this tour, as I may prefer the 3/24 show, but this is easily a top 3 show on this excellent run.

Got a reservation on the patio at Sleeping Village this evening and just found out the DJ is strictly playing live Dead on vinyl all night

Yeah. Going with another couple that pretty much only listens to hardcore. None of us are thrilled.

I spent a disproportionate part of my date tonight discussing the merits of early 70s compared to late 80s dead shows so I guess that went well. Yes I am absolutely in the right thread.

On this date 12 years ago The Todd and I saw The Dead at The Rosemont. I use the word "saw" loosely as we were both exceedingly intoxicated and somehow got separated before the show even started and did not manage to find each other until the middle of the second set. As I recall we had kind of sweet seats behind the stage and when I finally found The Todd he was at the opposite end of the arena 😂 Also I think we saw some exhibit of Mickey's artwork nearby? Audio and setlist here

There's a lot of threads I suppose I could've put this in, but I chose this one. If we already knew about it I had certainly forgotten about it.
A plan to create a venue dedicated to Jerry Garcia at the former Wishbone restaurant in the West Loop still is on track after a delay by the pandemic.
Peter Shapiro, who owns the music venue and restaurant Brooklyn Bowl in New York, on Tuesday told Block Club Chicago the West Loop project was still moving forward. The venue will pay homage to Garcia, the late guitarist and vocalist of the Grateful Dead.
It will be called Garcia. First announced in 2019, it was expected to open at 1001 W. Washington Blvd. in 2020. Shapiro said an updated timeline for the opening will be announced at a later date.

Yesterday: 1/22/78
Really sick set. Particularly good Cassidy and I’m fairly partial to the mid 80’s cuts. Good Samson and Delilah too, but not my favorite Not Fade Away.
Currently: 4/20/84
On the second set and it’s an absolute ripper. Begonias>Fire>Samson is such a killer opener. Takes a bit to find footing on the first set, really didn’t care for that cut of Little Red Rooster, but it picks up again by the back half of Brown-Eyed Woman. I haven’t listened to this one since I got the Dave’s Picks in the mail but it’s nice to be reminded how good it is.
I listened to like 15 new albums in a week and now I only want to listen to the dead

Jack Straw goes hard on there too! The harmonies from Bobby/Jer/Donna absolutely CRASH into the final 'chorus' or whatever you'd call it. Like a wave of energy.
