I had a really shitty theme picked out and most of my playlist put together, and then last weekend I went to a party some friends threw for another friend's birthday/college graduation gift. I was blown away by the music those kids picked out. Since I've seen my person talk about the terrible music high school kids listen to these days, I thought they would also appreciate knowing that some of those kids turn out to be college hipsters with a pretty decent taste in music. This one's for you, dij22 . 1. Earth, Wind & Fire - Boogie Wonderland 2. Pulp - Disco 2000 3. New Order - Age of Consent 4. Blondie - Call Me 5. The Psychedelic Furs - Love My Way 6. Duran Duran - Hungry Like The Wolf 7. The Smiths - Bigmouth Strikes Again 8. Echo & the Funnymen - Lips Like Sugar 9. The Strokes - Last Nite 10. Sweater-Kinney - Light Rail Coyote

"Murder Simulators" for: @tima I started making my playlist, got bored, and decided to set a challenge for myself. Here's a playlist composed entirely of original works from video game soundtracks. Title refers to Jack Thompson, one of the primary proponents of how video games, especially violent ones, are ruining today's youth. There's definitely an expectation of what video games sound like, be it chiptunes or orchestral scores that belong as much in a movie as a game, so I've tried my best to break out of those molds. Aside from one track, these are all the versions that you hear in game, no covers (the one exception does not have the original on Spotify) or remixes. I hope you enjoy it, or at least, don't hate it!

This next bunch of songs goes out to monasterymonochrome. I used to make mix CD's, back when people did those things. I had a favorite one, which I wanted to recreate. Unfortunately, Spotify doesn't have everything. So here's some songs from that favorite mix CD, coupled with some other tunes I've been hitting the replay button on lately. General Experimix #11. Depeche Mode - I Feel You 2. Edwyn Collins - A Girl Like You 3. Luscious Jackson - Daughters of the Kaos 4. Deus - Suds and Soda 5. Soul Coughing - Down to This 6. Goo Goo Dolls - Lazy Eye 7. Lauren Christy - Breed 8. Deerhoof - The Trouble With Candyhands 9. Caravan Palace - Clash 10. Oasis - Angel Child (Demo) 11. Jim Carroll Band - People Who Died 12. Eminem and Redman - Off the Wall 13. Love and Rockets - No New Tale to Tell Omg! I just checked the second page of this thread and I'd totally missed it last week! This looks awesome - will listen tonight!

Sorry teekoh, this wasn't specific to you, but I think this will still work, so you can either hate it or love it, or be indifferent to it. We'll see. Title: Leaving Pat Flegel Description: Getting to know Cindy Lee I decided to use this time to highlight one of the most fascinating artists of the 21st century - Pat Flegel. The mix begins with Women tracks, from their two albums on Spotify; the middle is a focus on the brief project Androgynous Mind that would later transition into Flegel's current status as Cindy Lee. All three major releases by Cindy Lee are represented, to show the journey from Women to Model Express. To fill out the mix, I wanted transitions that made sense, so I included two instrumentals to break it up - both from Chris Reimer, who's unexpected passing no doubt had an impact on Flegel. This mix is intended to be an exploration into transitions, and while I have no idea how difficult that is, I think that Flegel has left us stitched ideas and concepts that can be a window into that world. You can do with it as you will, but I encourage you to check out more. I wanted to include "Bullfight" by Women (their last song recorded together), but it's not on Spotify unfortunately. There is nothing from Preoccupations, as Flegel only contributed their cover art. I don't think you can get the full experience by playing this through your car stereo. I'd suggest ear phones, seriously. 1. Women - Cameras (opening track of their first album) 2. Women - Black Rice (naturally on here, as it's their most popular song) 3. Women - Locust Valley (at the tail end of Public Strain) 4. Women - Eyesore (a good bookened to the band, tho I think Bullfight would have been better) 5. Chris Reimer - Mustard Gas (brief, but purposeful) 6. Androgynous Mind - Knock On My Door (solo Flegel, but the most fully realized song under this project) 7. Androgynous Mind - Desert Corpse (the conclusion to his Nightstalker EP) 8. Chris Reimer - Waving Goodbye From a Tree (Title aside, this seemed to fit really well right here. Beautiful instrumental) 9. Cindy Lee - No Worth No Cost (opening track to Malenkost. Noisy, but elegant) 10. Cindy Lee - A Message From the Aching Sky (Flegel at their most playful) 11. Cindy Lee - Operation (one of my favorites from Act of Tenderness, and I believe the only "single" from the album) 12. Cindy Lee - Wandering and Solitude (another highlight from Act of Tenderness) 13. Cindy Lee - What I Need (Alt version found on Model Express, that gets layered in more synths. I chose this over the original, as it shows a bit more innovation on their part) 14. Cindy Lee - Are You Lonesome Tonight (honestly, the most bizarre song by Cindy Lee, because of how conventional it is. Cover of a song most notably done by Elvis, but the original is by Lou Handman and Roy Turk) Hope you like it, at least a little bit.

Originally I was going to look at my person's best of 2018 list and hope I could find some stuff they missed, but they never posted it. So I was going through albums I missed and got to the 1975 and fell in love with it's not living if it's not with you. Looked it up and saw it was about H. Thought about other songs I enjoyed this year and how I kinda discovered Velvet Underground this year in preparation for the exhivit in NYC. And then I went to an old playlist I had and literally the first track I saw was King Heroin by James Brown. Thought why not do a playlist specifically about heroin. So here we are. My theme is heroin. 1. King Heroin - James Brown 2. Lust for Life - Iggy Pop 3. Perfect Day - Lou Reed 4. It's Not Living if it's Not With You - The 1975 5. True Faith - New Order 6. Heroin - Velvet Underground 7. Cold Turkey - John Lennon 8. The Needle and the Damage Done - Neil Young 9. Needle in the Hay - Elliott Smith 10. Rejoice - Julien Baker 11. Hurt (cover) - Johnny Cash When making it I thought it would be cool to try and follow someone's journey with it. Tried to make the flow addiction to moment of clarity to recovery to relapse to succumbing to it essentially. Hopefully I did that. Other random.things: First track is meant to be more of a preface Felt kinda lame including two tracks written by Lou Reed but with this theme it would be disservice to not include either Battled with including Under the Bridge but decided against it for whatever reason. Enjoy scoots hopefully the baby likes it too

True Faith isn't about heroin and I don't think any of the New Order guys were strung out like that.
Dave Gahan does seem sorely underrepresented though

Dave Gahan does seem sorely underrepresented though True: Songfacts: What is the song "True Faith" about lyrically? Is it about heroin addiction? Peter: "True Faith" features some of the best New Order lyrics in my opinion, but no, it is not about heroin, that is not something that any of our lyrics ever touched on. I think it's clear to see though that the lyrics do reflect being under some sort of influence.

I’m on my phone in Iowa, so let’s see how this works. For zircona1, my initial thought was to do all murder ballads. No idea why. Ended up going with something based on the user name and fake diamonds. Turns out most of those happen to be “black”, and I finished with a song by the blackest Diamond of them all. Enjoy!

For neader: I struggled coming up with a theme for this one - as our music tastes don't have a ton of overlap, or at least it seemed so based on our 2018 lists. Thought about something Lou Reed / VU based after you mentioned getting into them this year, but ended up going off of someone else I know you love: Julien Baker. So this playlist is inspired by the feeling I get from her music. It's a toned down form of catharsis, one based on a beautiful strain of melancholy - and one that has created some of my favorite music. So I put in some of my favorite recent singer-songwriter tracks - from mostly female voices - and also included a few more emotionally stark classics (s/o Jackson C. Frank). To keep things from getting to same-sy I threaded instrumental interludes between most of the songs. Usually these are from American Primitive style players - tried to go for particularly melodic numbers. So yea! Save this one for a day inside. Maybe when it's a little gray and raining? And if the mood is right, hopefully it can bring some beauty to that day.

I'd heard a few of these before actually because I've played the games - Journey, Monument Valley, Alto - but for the most part this was uncharted territory. I found the bit from Hollow Knight and Bastion to be my favorites, but the rest were intriguing and now I'm interested in playing the games. Overall I enjoyed it!

Bastion's score is pretty well regarded, so if you enjoyed that, you should definitely check out not only that, but the other game from that studio, Transistor, which is even more focused on music. That Hollow Knight piece is one of my favorite recent vg tracks, so I'm glad it stuck out for you.

How do I find someone's playlist on the Spotify app? Is this possible? In this thread, if you click the "share" icon on anyone's playlist and copy the link to your clipboard, you can paste it in the Spotify app searchbar and it will pull it up direct.
