Discussion thread for the impending top films of the 2010s list. This is a place to share favorites others might have not seen, ask for recommendations, and share some preliminary lists. We can also talk about the massive influx of lists that publications will be putting out in here.
I don’t think we need to start the actual finalized list thread for a minute since some of us don’t live in NY/LA/Cities where smaller films show right away. I was thinking sometime in mid February for the cutoff but I also know it can take a while for me to get around to recommendations.
To start this off, what are some “underseen” films that will likely make your list? Do you have any particularly hot takes about placement?

I haven’t seen Cloud Atlas since it was in theaters. I remember really enjoying it at the time but I don’t know if I’d feel the same way now

Currently my hottest take is probably that About Time will be on my list and I don’t think Inception will be

A couple notes on indiewire
- Her and Toy Story 3 are pretty surprising omissions - Only 1 Pixar inclusion. Rough - The lone Nolan inclusion was correct - The lone Scorsese inclusion is correct - I am trying to figure out if comedy got shafted here and have no opinion. Thoughts? - the only 2 superhero movies are Spider Verse and Black Panther. Wouldn't be my picks but I'm glad they didn't clog up the list with the upper tier of the MCU. What's the biggest omission from this category? Im guessing Logan would be most people's pick here. -they put their 3 most divisive inclusions back to back to back. Holler when you see it -Is Fallout really a better action film than the John Wicks?

fallout is better than john wick but ghost protocol is the best action movie of the decade

My list will likely lean more mainstream/blockbuster films. For some reason I stopped caring for a lot of indie films as I got older. Some of my non-MCU favorites. Not in order.
Snowpiercer Ex Machina Blade Runner 2049 Drive We Need to Talk about Kevin Hell or High Water Blue Ruin Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (remake) Blue Valentine Young Adult 50/50 Dallas Buyers Club Source Code Super 8 The Town

I watched that for the first time on an international flight shortly after my grandparents on my mom’s side had passed and I sobbed uncontrollably. It was messy but probably good for me lol

A movie people like, but probably won't be discussed as being among the decade's best the way I think it should -- Edge of Tomorrow

at least 1 Villeneuve will make my top 20 list probably thats an interesting discussion of how I'd rank those.
Prisoners I need to rewatch but I really liked it. I respect Enemy for what it was going for but it didn't do a ton for me.
Sicario is a favorite and I think it's ridiculously intense plus well shot. I think it helps that I really love Taylor Sheridan as a screenwriter.
I don't remember Arrival blowing me away as much visually as the others, but it may be my favorite writing wise of them.
Blade Runner 2049 is his best film visually and honestly probably in top 5 for visuals of the 2010's films if you take into account effects + cinematography. The film was just gorgeous and blew me away in that regard, but I also felt like it was lacking in substance. Maybe I need to rewatch it, but I'm not sure it makes my list for that reason, even though I want it to because of how goddamn gorgeous it is.
I haven't watched Incendies and I really need to.
I'm not sure any of these make my top 20 list but Sicario and Arrival are up there in general. But despite that I'd have a real discussion of him as "best director of the 2010's"

Incendies is great though I don’t know what my favorite of his is. I haven’t disliked any of them though

That's a discussion question I want to open up the floor for- What director had the best run of the 2010's? Like, counting 2010 to present output only
I'm really tempted to say Villenueve (Prisoners, Enemy, Sicario, Arrival, Blade Runner, and possibly Incendies too though I haven't seen it). I'd say Yorgos Lanthimos (Dogtooth, Lobster, Killing of a Sacred Deer, the Favourite, I haven't seen Alps) is a close number two.
As mentioned previously in this thread I havent seen Inherent Vice or Phantom Thread yet, both of which I hope to fix soon, so I can't really put PTA into this discussion.

Not sure any director stands head and shoulders above the rest of the crowd. I really love Linklater's output this decade but would hesitate to say he's been the best of the best.

I'd say Scorsese had a good decade. Shutter Island, Hugo, Wolf of Wall Street and Silence. Dunno if I'd say its the best but its pretty solid.
