I don’t think Valerie’s Week of Wonders is really a horror movie unless you’re super scared of periods Thank you for this heads up lol

There’s some good surreal Czech new wave stuff in there though. Let’s do a November Czech New Wave challenge

In the picture accompanying the Dissolve's review, there's a skull -- the scariest bone.

Fortunate enough to have the time/space to watch a movie at my desk today. 02. Arachnophobia (1990; Frank Marshall)
Had to go with something relatively family-friendly, and hadn't seen this in a few years. It holds up! Sort of amazing how representative of the '90s this seems in its general atmosphere, and it was released in the first summer of the decade. They should've put John Goodman in every movie from 1987-1993.

01. Leviathan (1989)George P. CosmatosA few things about this shitty 1989 sea-monster movie that you should take note of. 1. It has Robocop in it (Peter Weller) and there's a reason they chose him for Robocop. His acting is robotic, no matter what role he's cast in. 2. The director, Mr. Cosmatos, is the whole reason Rambo became a thing. First Blood was just a movie about Stallone being back from the war and having PTSD, and bad ole Brian Dennehy doesn't care. Rambo First Blood 2 is where he just starts fucking shit up. Hell, this even has Richard Crenna in it. Cosmatos also directed Tombstone. 3. This is the monster, and it's only in the movie for like 20 minutes. I watched this as a kid, and thought "OMG, sea monsters are real," and blah blah blah. This movie sucks so much shit now, I can't believe I sat through the whole thing again as an adult. But then again, I don't really have many options when trying to soothe a crying 7 week old at 2 am this morning. Horrible effects, dumb plot, shameful camera work, and for an 80s horror movie it's kinda light on the sex and gore. Tho, if you read the parents guide on IMDB it's kinda humorous. Pros: Ernie Hudson, aka the embodiment of the 1980s down on his luck semi-protagonist. Cons: WTF is that monster. Also, no John Goodman. Overall tho, I liked it.

Awesome theater showing - apparently the 7th annual October 1st showing at this particular theatre. Great show. More to say on this tomorrow because they serve beer at this theatre and i drink beer at this theatre.

Kicking it off with... Such a terrific example of how much music can add to a horror movie. This score is just perfect. Honestly didn't expect to see this again - loved it the first time, but I generally don't revisit movies like this. It's actually more effective the second time through even though I mostly remember everything that happens (it's been three years, and that's my excuse). One note: I have to have the volume down a bit lower since my daughter's sleeping and I don't want to scar her for life, so subtitles are on. Very highly recommended using subtitles for this one. I don't know why but it adds to the enjoyment when noises are described.

1. Basket CaseThey got some mileage out of that puppet! Also enjoyed the ecosystem of the boarding house and the dream sequence was pretty fun. The dad was the best kill

1. Black ChristmasI had somehow never seen this and its just so scary and good. The performances are all great and the comedy mostly works still, as does all of the POV work. And the Peter characterization leading into the finale is just heads and shoulders better than the extremely on the nose nonsense in artless slashers. Great kick off. Margot Kidder is so good in this and pulls off like 3 absolutely classic fits.

2. It Chapter 2This is easily the worst fucking movie I've seen this year. Just an absolutely gawdawful failure on all levels. Absolutely incapable of being anywhere in the vicinity of tense or scary and after every half assed cgi set piece some sort of Reddit bot would vomit out a just vile quip like a hateful Jumanji 2. Does the worst Stephen King adaptaptation trope where instead of either taking on the heavier topics or ignoring them it just shouts them out in the first 20 minutes and moves on .ans subscribes absolutely no meaning or purpose to it. And its so fucking saccharine about characters that absolutely nobody in the world gives a shit about. Bill Hader gives ones of the worst performances I've ever seen on screen and there are moments where you think that James Macavoy and Jessica Chastain have left their body adn have some kind of autopilot control going on. The middle has an almost malick-esque relationship with pacing and structure where I figured Isiah Mustafa's character had died at some point and I had just forgotten. A bunch of freshman depaul kids just started tackling each other in the aisles about half way thru to entertain themselves and I was not mad. True horse shit and a great reminder that movies are bad.

3. Magic Chose this one a bit on a whim cuz Hopkins and burgess meredith and a dang doll and folks, thats what it is. Not a classic by any means but the Hopkins performance is fun as hell and Burgess Meredith is extremely badass and teh danged doll is v twisted. Could see why it has been forgotten but I would put it in the recommended category if your in the mo0d for a movie that kinda thinks its a heady drama as well as a schlocky haunted doll thing.

04. Basket Case (1982; Frank Henenlotter)Delightfully fun. I really related to the scene where the basket is fed an entire package of hot dogs. Cannot wait to see what the sequel has in store.

Really want to catch that midnight screening of The Thing on Friday night in Denver. Not sure I'll be functioning enough to see a movie that late and not fall asleep, though.
Also big thanks for posting all of those city-specific showings.

I really related to the scene where the basket is fed an entire package of hot dogs. The feeding scenes are interesting because because both times Dwayne starts gradually -- removing the foil from the burgers, dropping the hot dogs in one by one -- before proceeding to dump the whole lot in at once. Is he making sure Belial likes the dish first? Or does Belial's physiology require him to "warm up" in some way when eating?

Seems like he enjoys eating foil, just in smaller quantities than he enjoys burgers
