I heard the other day that's where the subreddit is having a meetup and those people seem unchill in the worst way possible.

Asking my Internet Friends for advice here.
K and I are moving Sunday morning bright and early. This morning I was informed that we cannot use the alley the block our new unit is on for reasons that really haven't been made clear to me and possibly involve an HOA (we are renting in a building with duplex condos). I was told we need to apply for a $25 "occupy the right of way" permit for the moving truck to unload our stuff, except the portal where we're supposed to do so online is a fucked up mess and doesn't actually link to the way to apply for the permit, and I'm sure as hell not signing up for anything else beyond that since it's asking for business insurance or whatever in the process.
I called the alderman's office, who directed me to the permitting office, who directed me to CDOT, and a couple hours later I still haven't been able to talk to an actual human about any of this. I've left voicemails and emails with CDOT on this but figured I'd ask the board at large if there's anything else I should be doing.
I am fine with paying the $25 to have this permit and make sure the moving truck has the space needed since we're gonna be living near a major intersection and I assume parking on a Sunday will be fucked up, but I am also considering
A. Getting the free, non-enforceable no-parking signs from my alderman's office and rolling the dice that people don't suck and leave us the space needed for a couple of hours, or,
B. Telling the HOA or whatever to fuck itself and have the truck use the alley anyway

Telling the HOA or whatever to fuck itself and have the truck use the alley anyway inform the moving company. they may have a solution. they helped me with a jam when i last moved. but also get the no-parking signs from the alderman's office. i'd be pressing more about why you can't use the alley. you probably do not want to upset an HOA right away, but sometimes you've just got to move. if you have a vehicle and have friends with vehicles, see if you can park a few cars on saturday to save the spots for the truck on sunday.

We are talking to the moving company tomorrow- they're Chicago based so they probably have an answer or at least will be able to tell me "Mr. Tweet you are overthinking this"

I do t have a recommendation. Just want to express empathy for this situation because moving is bad enough without this sort of bullshit. Fucking HOAs, too.

I feel like everyone in the city blocks alleyways so I wouldn't sweat it. You're only blocking for an hour at most plus it's a Sunday.

One thing I'll mention that may or may not matter to you - Bike the Drive is Sunday and all (or most) of LSD will be closed until Noon.

I'm pretty sure the onus is on your moving company for this.
but also, I think you're underestimating people and most people (around me at least) respect the free "no parking from x a.m. to x p.m." signs.

Just to close the loop here- moving company basically said the free signs will be fine and that they haven't had an issue with people respecting it, so it should be fine. We will not be needing LSD for transport although honestly I could use some LSD just as a reset after all this crap.
Thank you all!

FWIW we used those free signs twice and they worked zero times

Elbo Room was the one that had the giant pole right in the middle of the front of the stage, right?

I went into Elbo Room a couple times to drink but never saw a show there. The pole looks annoying from old photos
Excited to see what this ends up being I think?

The stage was also either triangle shaped or maybe a relatively extreme parallelogram. Made for some interesting set-ups. Between the stage shape and the pole it was the legacy ballpark of Chicago clubs.
Always appreciated that they were willing to book unknown local bands, but the load-in/out was a pain with the stairs. Most appreciated that it’s where I met board-adjacent fellow music fan, Ted (almost 20 years ago).

What is the best encounter you've had with a celebrity in Chicago?

When I was a little kid I absolutely loved watching Siskel & Ebert, and then Ebert & Roeper. We were flying out of O'Hare for a trip, and my mom gasped and nudged me and said "That's Richard Roeper! You have to go say hi to him." And I was like, "Why would I say hi to him? What do we have to talk about? I'm like 12?" and my dad said "Just tell him you watch his show and you're a fan, he'll love it." So I go over and very-nervously say "hi, I watch your show, I love movies and I'm a big fan," and he smiles and says "Aw that's great!" or whatever and shakes my hand. As I turn to walk away, I accidentally kick his suitcase that he is pulling behind him, and he gets frustrated trying to flip it back onto the wheels before continuing on his way. Completely died inside.
Actually though, my most memorable "encounter" was the lack of one whatsoever. I was at a completely-empty Las Fuentes on Wrightwood & Halsted with friends having margaritas when Teri Hemmert walked in with two friends. I was genuinely starstruck and thought, how cool would it be to just be able to mention to her that I've always appreciated hearing her voice and her message and that I've heard her on XRT my whole life yadda yadda yadda. Thought, maybe I'd say something on the way out. But the restaurant was completely empty, it seemed awkward, we'd been drinking...the moment did not feel right whatsoever. Months later, she posted on Facebook that earlier that year she'd had dinner with two of her closest friends at her favorite Mexican restaurant, Las Fuentes, to break the news to them that she'd been diagnosed with cancer.

Back when my daughter was like 3 or 4, we were letting her run around Crown Fountain on a hot summer day. I was standing by the side, and out of the blue, I saw Vince Vaughan walking right by the pond wearing a Blackhawks jersey. Just said a quick hi to him
Since I was an intern at XRT I had lots of interactions with the air staff. Lin really was the nicest guy in the world, almost every morning after his shift he would come by and talk to the interns.
Terri Hemmert had a Christmas party in her house in Lincoln Park and actually invited all of the interns. I was a massive dork and geeked out because it's basically a Beatles museum in there

Obama spoke at my high school graduation and I had a chance to meet him/get a picture but he was just a senator then and I did not care. Huge oversight on my part.
