Driving back from Michigan this week I was thinking how much I would hate my life if I had to drive everywhere. I didn't drive at all for 12 years of my 20s/ early 30s.

to me, driving is boring. when we went to santa fe from okc last month, i'd have rather stabbed my eyes out than do that again. the western okla / tx panhandle / eastern new mexico stretch is brutally boring.
but for so many of our trips, driving takes as long as flying would.

I like driving but as someone who spent the better part of 10 years taking public transportation to work and now has to drive I wish I could go back to the El (even as shitty as it can be).

It is! I feel like I couldn't really enjoy it since I had to be somewhat alert though.

Yeeeeeeeeep, a deer ran in front of me on my way back from Milwaukee. It's such a nice change of pace after Indiana though.

i love driving and had an absolute blast last summer going from detroit to la and back again (special thanks to all of you for making time to see me!). Road trips are great but driving for like 15 mins through a city sucks.

We're driving for our honeymoon, so I'm pretty sure that'll use up any good feelings I have about it. And it'd take a heck of a show for me to go to Detroit when I have to be at work the next morning ever again.

I'll say this much, I have a hard time complaining about driving in Chicago after only spending 4 days driving around LA. Their traffic is batshit crazy.

I'm a big fan of pushing a button on my phone and having someone else drive me places

I can't believe that I use to do 3 hour+ drives to South Florida for shows on weeknights. 90 minutes to Tampa was bad enough.

Related-ish: I have no idea how Lyft drivers make money in LA. Ludicrously cheep. At one point with traffic we were forced to take an hour-long Lyft ride and it was $21, which cannot be enough to live on, especially since I'm sure a lot of that goes to Lyft HQ.

I think it just used to mean way more to me, travelling for a show. Now I'm just a jaded asshole.

yep.
i have a pretty silly sense of guilt whenever im like "yeah i dont wanna walk 15 minutes to the bottle for a free show of a band ive never seen" when it used to be "holy shit i must travel 6 hours round trip on a tuesday night to see a band i've seen 5 times already at the fucking congress" or whatever.
fuck i'm old.

I used to take the Chinatown bus from Boston to NYC and back for shows so much in college. I'd drive seven hours to a show a hundred times before I ever did that again.

Stopping by Chicago on our way home from Bonnaroo for a show Monday night is the silliest show trip I've taken.

I still travel for shows pretty frequently, I am one of the younger ones here but when I do I make a weekend out of it.
i.e. Julien Baker in the middle of October on a Saturday in Ashville (4 hr 45 min), going to spend the whole weekend checking out the city same with LCD Soundsystem a weekend later in Atlanta (4 hr) and Julien Baker again on a Friday in December in Memphis (3 hr).
It's never just for the show and then I drive back. Even with Kanye it was like that. Very fortunate the Columbus, Cleveland, and Chicago shows were all on weekends.

I have a newfound appreciation for how wide Chicago's roads are after owning a car in New York. Driving on the FDR and the BQE can be nerve wracking, especially in a larger vehicle.
Did the trip back and forth between Chicago and NYC for the first time in a while last week. Did it in 12.5 hours westbound and 12.75 hours eastbound (including stops). Not bad at all.

when I was in my little hometown I used to drive about 90 minutes for any shows in Houston, and on some rare occasions 4 hours to either Austin or New Orleans.
Now I'm finally actually in Houston, I haven't got myself to justify driving the 2 and a half hours for any single concert in Austin yet. I'd have done Arcade Fire and LCD if those were on weekends but weekday shows would be too much. In general though, between there being decent enough options here, me being less excited about concerts in general (like there's not a ton of bands huge on my list I haven't seen at this point), and the fact that I already travel a lot for my job leading me to want to stay home on the weekends a lot, its hard convincing myself to go to single shows outside of the city.
Though when I'm assigned a trip for work my first thing to do is look up concerts there.

Only thing I hated about having a car was parking in Chicago. Now I have a two car garage (pinky up) so I'm good.

I've never paid for parking here, nor have I paid for whatever that city sticker/registration deal is. I've had a couple of minor issues, but nothing serious for 6 years of living here.

I admittedly lived in bad spots for parking. My car was hit a couple times when I lived off Southport/Fullerton and then obviously living in Wrigleyville is badbadbad if you have a car.
