Imo water night had the best combo of visuals and setlist. There was some great imagery last night though, a drippy chrome effect in the second set was especially cool.
I will be really curious to see what D&C does with it. I don't think they will do anything near as creative, will probably just be a bunch of spinning stealies and bears

Worth making it to the end just for "it made me feel like I was back at Allstate Arena, that dumpy minor-league hockey arena outside of Chicago where I have seen and loved Phish many times, all while trying to avoid the worst bathrooms in arena rock."

I don't think this guy is a great writer by any means but he always manages to hit me right in the midwestern GenX feels.
Also, were the 2022 Alpine shows that bad??

I thought people loved Sunday of Alpine 22. Am i thinking of a different year? 2021 maybe?

I was at Alpine 2022 for Sat/Sun and while Sat was def better than Sun, both were pretty forgettable compared to other sets I caught that year. But, of course, that didn't deter me from having a great time + one of my fave weekends of that year. The larger Phan community really fuckin' hated those shows tho, I think they were gearing up for a reprise of Alpine 2019 (7/14 especially) and were let down. The Sunday second set had some really weird pacing / ripcorded jams, and ended with Fishman on the vacuum.
That said, Hyden only complains here about Trey's writing style, which is like the most boring Phish complaint you can muster up in 2024.

His pieces always speak to me in an "excited kid" way but I rarely find a lot of depth to them - my interest was most notably piqued by his promotion of his book, "This Isn't Happening: Radiohead's "Kid A" and the Beginning of the 21st Century" which I preordered expecting it to be a focused over-analysis in the vein of Klosterman. It was at times, but I actually quit reading it with about 40 pages left because it just devolved into "Man, I really love Radiohead" by the end. Largely why I am not super interested in his upcoming Springsteen book.

this hit spotify sometime recently after being released physically in march good shit, sounds very well mixed god this is sick so far. cannot overstate how well it is mixed compared to some other live releases. disease > makisupa > chalkdust is an excellent run with them firing on all cylinders i don't really like abrupt starts to ghost, really like when they fall into the groove over one of trey's loops. so this version starts kinda duddy to me but mike shines all over this ghost then there's a mikes > simple > dog faced boy > ya mar > weekapaug that just rules. cannot wait to get into the second show but had to revisit the first one again today after how good it was. and speaking of facemelting mikes, i have yet to dive into the entire big cypress show but just watched this yesterday? oh my god? evil phish!

Anyone here pay for the app? So annoying that they use nugs tech but it's an extra $10 a month. A $15 joint subscription would hit the spot

Been working on a personal project to chronologically listen to every Phish festival set during the lead-up to Mondegreen. Just finished up my first complete Clifford Ball listen yesterday and figured I'd throw my thoughts in here. Overall, 2 nights of pretty exemplary Phish music. Like, great reference versions of each track but few HOLY SHIT moments. A fairly approachable listen, but maybe not a revelatory one.
8/16/96, Clifford Ball Night 1 - Clifford Ball boxset - First night of first Phish festival. Seen by fans as historic show w/ solid music. I agree but think it’s a great representation of an ideal A- Phish set. Like, greatly executed, bouncy, fun versions of so many tracks. Highlights: Gin, Ya Mar, Halley’s, Free, Contact. DWD jam is condensed but terrific, and Hood ends with some dark ambient noise. S3 is strongest, but overall highlight is probs Contact > Weekapaug to close S2. Heartfelt then searing.
8/17/96, Clifford Ball Night 2 - Clifford Ball boxset - Another night of great - if a little paint-by-numbers - Phish. S1 breezes by, S2 stretch of Runaway Jim > It’s Ice > Brother (w/ Ben & Jerry) was the night’s highlight. Fluffhead is a great soaring reference point version. And Scent of a Mule w/ extended solo jams was super fun. Probably the best version of that I can think of.

Evolve is out. I like it. Life Saving Gun, Human Nature, Lonely Trip are all good. I've got a feeling they're going to start playing the shit out of Hey Stranger. Haven't read too-too much about the album but looks like most of these songs have been around awhile?
Tour starts Friday!

Funny to me that 3 of these tracks (Evolve, A Wave of Hope, Lonely Trip) already have studio versions on Trey's 2020 Lonely Trip record, but I guess he wanted full-band versions too (that album is just Trey + Fish). My early favorites are the ones I'm already familiar with, but I do really like Ether Edge and Valdese too. Sometime this tour they're gonna do a crazy version of Life Saving Gun and I'm excited to hear it.

Put a CoT offer in this morning, guy took too long to respond and in the meantime I talked myself out of it. Guess I will try for Grand Rapids.
