Andruw Jones is at risk of being dropped from the HoF ballot because of the arcane rules. He's deserving of eventual induction, obviously not first year eligibility. I really hate the voting rules for the Hall. I know it's a stacked ballot and all but Vizquel getting 30% while Rolen has 10% and Jones has 5% is so ridiculous. Even as a die-hard Indians fan who, no joke, was born during the 95 Series and almost named Omar...this is insane. Andruw's defense was as transcendent at CF as Omar's was at SS and their respective offensive contributions aren't even comparable. Anyone who votes for Omar without also including a vote for Andruw is over-romanticizing the SS position in a search for The Next Ozzie Smith.

I get that Jones was an incredible defensive CF at his peak, but even that 10 GGs think overstates his case a bit. His defensive apex was closer to 5 or 6 years. I wouldn't be against him in, but I'm not heartbroken if he's not.
I'm also biased a bit because he really dogged it on the Yankees.

Jay Bruce back to the Mets, 3/39. Definitely less than he was initially asking and what was predicted.
Edit: MLBTR actually pegged that exact contract for him. Good for them.

Weirdly that's about exactly where Fangraphs crowd sourced him too. He had a good year but he's probably a DH in a year or two (ie Mets gonna Met)

Miguel Gonzalez back to the White Sox for one year, 4.75M.

Addison Reed to the Twins for 2 years just under $17M.
Based on some of the contracts given out to lesser relievers this winter, I think his agent fucked up pretty badly.

Yeah I don't understand that deal. I'd rather have him (at his age) then the two guys the Cubs grabbed. I would probably trust Reed going forward more than Holland, so I'm not sure how Boras will spin that.

Astros got Gerrit Cole from the Bucs for a four player package headlined by Joe Musgrove and Colin Moran.
I assume this takes them out of the Darvish sweepstakes. I'm guessing he's either headed back to the Rangers or to the Cubs.

Reed and Darvish share the same agent. Twins have been rumored to be interested.

Darvish on the cubs would be interesting but I don’t feel like he’s a huge upgrade from Jake tbh

Yanks were apparently willing to give up Clint Frazier, who's supposed to have a higher ceiling than any of those guys. It sounds like Pittsburgh wanted a deeper package rather than one better prospect.

The Pirates GM made a cryptic comment about guys not being available who people think were available, and combined with the NYY being in on Darvish it sounds like they might have pulled Frazier because they're tryimg to dump Ellsbury on someone.

McCutchen traded to the Pirates.
Is no one going to sign these free agents??

It was just low-hanging fruit that I couldn't resist.
Seriously though - it seems like the Pirates are trying to top the Marlins for how bad of returns they can get on some of these trades.

With the Toronto Blue Jays announcing that they will be adding protective netting down foul lines on Monday, 25 of 30 MLB teams have expanded their safety precautions to protect fans from rogue foul balls. Only the Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Angels, Oakland Athletics, Baltimore Orioles and Miami Marlins remain among teams that have not yet expanded their netting.

Really hope the Sox do. Can't speak to the other stadiums, but stuff gets hit pretty hard into the crowd at the Cell.

I could be wrong, but I think it had been announced that the plan is to add netting before the season starts. Not sure why they've delayed it this long.

It looks like there's not an official statement from them, but I did find this: Ald. Patrick Thompson (11th), whose ward includes Guaranteed Rate Field, the home of the White Sox, was among the aldermen who voted for the resolution.
“In my conversation with the White Sox, they’re already in plans to expand their netting at Guaranteed Rate Field,” Thompson said. “The resolution is just to call attention to that and make sure that both the Sox and the Cubs – and hopefully then other cities – will look at us as a leader in terms of making sure we have safety.”

Baseball America' top 100 prospects is out and the Sox have five on the list: 4.) Eloy Jimenez 11.) Michael Kopech 57.) Alec Hansen 58.) Luis Robert 82.) Dane Dunning In less exciting news, Fernando Tatis Jr. is ranked 9th. That James Shields trade is not looking great.

The Blue Jays seem to have the sons of former MLBers market cornered.

Chipper, Thome, Vlad, and Hoffman got in. Edgar just missed, hopefully he is able to get in next year in last year of eligibility.

Picture if the Padres tried to trade Hoffman straight up for Mussina at any point during their careers. They'd get laughed at and hung up on.

Billy Wagner is basically the same player as Trevor Hoffman and is getting far fewer votes.
