I wish there was some rhyme or reason as to which halftime shows we get to see on the broadcast because some of them have been really fun. 3/4 of Goodie Mob at the Dream/Fever game last month was a good one.

I've long been very annoyed that airlines charge for wi-fi so if this kicks off a trend of them making it free that'll be great

Heading to Portland tomorrow for the first time. Pretty pumped. We're going to hike the Mt. Hood area on Thursday and then Multnomah Falls and things around there Friday. Having dinner at Gregory Gourdet's restaurant on Friday and Langbaan on Saturday, a Thai tasting menu place that just won the Beard award for best restaurant in the country. More excited for the food than the hiking if I'm being honest.
If anyone has any Portland cocktail bar or brunch recs I'd love to hear them.

it's been 7 years and I think a fair amount of the places I liked have closed but Nong's Khao Man Gai is/was worth the acclaim and a visit for lunch.

What's an appropriate price to pay to upgrade to first class for a 4 hour flight?

What's an appropriate price to pay to upgrade to first class for a 4 hour flight? The reddit consensus on this as someone with a United credit card is $50 an hour but for me that is normally too high unless you are getting the pod seating. $200 to just sit in a seat with slightly more leg room not particularly interesting. Id say since Covid I've only been charged for booze in coach 20% of the time (never put your credit card on file lol)

if it's lie-flat, i'd agree with the above at $50/hour if it was a red eye and/or it was near end of year and would bump me up a status level.

It's a red eye and it's going for $240 right now - not lay down unfortunately. I'm going to wait it out since only two seats are taken, but the comfort factor is kind of huge here.

I generally kept United Silver from like 2018-2023. I got upgraded a few times in 18 and 19 but the pandemic just threw it all off and seems like tons of people got status when they relaxed requirements because I didn't get upgraded once from like 21-23 and was always waaay down the list. I finally lost it this year after a year of much less work travel plus doing most of our personal on Southwest due to a companion pass. I imagine that was finally the end of all the people who got it from the relaxed pandemic requirements?

Southwest announced that assigned seats would begin to be available the second half of 2025. They're also introducing red eye flights and more international options via partnerships (I think Icelandair is the only one announced so far). Plus two free checked bags will still be available.

Do any of y'all have experience with the secondary market there/is it similar at all to the US? i used stubhub for a show in london in 2019. it was a similar process and the tickets were delivered on time. i know viagogo is also more active in europe than in the US. i used that for a show in sweden, but it was so long ago that the ticket was mailed to me. so my experience with that may not still be accurate.

Yeah Viagogo was the stubhub of England when I lived there but it looks like stubhub bought viagogo judging by the viagogo website

Not going to do the Louisville trip I was thinking about, hopefully will do that next year when my wife can go too (she technically got hired full time at the place she has been a contract worker at for almost two years, so she has no VA time built up). Instead, next weekend I'm going to St. Louis for a couple of days.
Mannequin Pussy Thursday night, and the a huge whiskey fest with like 80 distilleries Friday night, so that should be a good time

I’ve returned from my weeklong jaunt in Peru with my good friend and I am very tired but it was an exceptional trip. Little roundup:
Flew into Lima and spent a couple of days there doing a little bit of wandering in the Miraflores neighborhood (as we discovered is pretty standard for most tourists to do lol). Ate an astronomical amount of seafood over the course of these two days since we were right on the coast and I don’t think I had a single bad bite of food. It was also dirt cheap to eat insanely decadent meals. We booked a street food tour of the giant market there which was definitely the right call as I retained almost none of my high school Spanish. We opted not to book the big Michelin star places, and I don’t really regret that at all.
After our time in Lima we flew to Cusco and promptly got smacked in the face by the altitude. I managed ok but my friend’s shit was wrecked for like 24 hours. Had some decent to great meals in Cusco and toured an old monastery and a couple of old churches. Our hotel was originally a convent that they happened to find ruins in the basement of which is wild and was fun to look at.
We booked a day trip from Cusco to Machu Picchu which really does seem like the move if you aren’t doing the Inca trail or trying to get the Sun Gate view at sunrise. There’s not much of interest directly in Aguas Calientes which I guess makes sense as everyone is there to see Machu Picchu. We got on our bus and had a tour guide for Circuit 1, which is apparently slightly different now if you’ve gone in previous years. There are now 3 circuits, with 1 getting you the upper view of the ruins, 2 getting you a much more limited upper view of the ruins and a close up loop, and 3 giving you just the close up loop. We finished the circuit pretty quickly and it was at this point one of the other guides offered us the circuit 2 lanyard for 50 soles each (approximately 15 USD per person). We obviously accepted and got to see way more of the ruins than we had initially planned, our original guide stuck with us and explained a lot of the historical stuff. This could have been a scam of some kind, but I guess I don’t really care because it was worth it lol. One of the most breathtaking things I’ve ever seen and that includes stuff like the Grand Canyon and Victoria Falls. Feels entirely surreal when you’re there and I know that nobody really has to recommend Machu Picchu but like, if you have the means to get there I cannot recommend it enough.
We had another couple days to look around Cusco and went to San Pedro market and took a small hike up to the massive Jesus statue on the edge of town. There’s definitely a lot to see but I don’t feel like I did too much crammed into the trip, nor did I feel like I majorly missed out on anything. I also ate my body weight in ceviche. Tangentially related, I don’t really feel like going to work tomorrow.

i'm leveling up in the wook world, going to king gizz in Austin and NOLA in mid-november. never been to Austin but unfortunately we won't have much time there, though i'd still gladly accept dinner suggestions. I know next to nothing about this city. show is in a southeast burb at Germania insurance amph and not quite sure where we're staying yet.

Those are a couple of great food cities.
If I was going to Austin and only had time for one meal it would probably be Terry Black's.

We’re going back to NOLA the first week of December. Cant wait.
I guess now would be a good time to request recos for Santa Fe (probably breakfast or lunch), Albuquerque, Phoenix and Sedona (lunch). We are visiting the U.S. Southwest in two weeks. No Asian, no seafood, please.

Phoenix: If you can snag a reservation at The Wrigley Mansion, it's a pretty phenomenal meal with the best view you'll get in the area. My buddies and I have enjoyed hanging around The Churchill - it's a food hall in a fun area.
Santa Fe: El Milagro is great for green and red chili. The Pantry was one of our favorite spots for a quick bite. Tune Up is good for a breakfast burrito. Second Street Brewery has a cool location near the railyard.

Magnolia Cafe is also good; used be 24/7, but now it’s 7a-10p. Third choice for diner would be Kerbey Lane (multiple locations). Guero’s Taco Bar is a popular tourist spot that is actually good; one of my local pals liked Maria’s Taco Xpress better; I thought it was good, but less lively than Guero’s. Obviously the most important thing to get would be barbecue. My favorite place is no longer in existence (RIP Ruby’s on Guadalupe), so I’d just try one of the Eater-recommended joints - whatever works best with your location and schedule. I’m gonna bet they’re all pretty good.

No Asian, no seafood, please. santa fe: dolina for breakfast. tip sophia's, la choza, or la boca (or taberna in the back) for lunch. the latter has a lot of seafood on the menu, but you can definitely avoid it and i think it was the best meal i had in santa fe. sedona: hideaway house. phoenix: when i was last in phoenix, it was the last night of a whirlwind around the southwest and we just wanted something simple like pizza. i think the parlor and bianco are the best options for italian in phoenix. my past trips were 10+ years ago, so not going on old recommendations.

Just wrapped up a week in Oaxaca. Pretty much nonstop eating the most insane mole and drinking more mezcal than I ever thought possible. We spent two days touring palenques/distilleries and just wandered the city stopping at random places aside from that. Beautiful place and I can’t wait to come back (although we shipped back enough mezcal to last us a long while).
Day of the Dead celebrations were starting the last couple of days we were there which was awesome to see although I was not mad about coming before the real crowds hit.

also just returning from Oaxaca and will co-sign it as a killer destination. there's a direct American flight from DFW now so it's relatively easy to get to at this point. I paid a lot specifically to go for Dia De Los Muertos but I'm guessing it's pretty reasonable if you go at another time and plan ahead.
just copying and pasting all my food destinations, would recommend basically any of them:
Thurs: Totopo Guero Lechoncito de Oro
Friday: La Popular La Ancestral
Saturday: Pasillo De Humo Tacos del Carmen Tacos El Sireno La Chefinita
Was a quick trip so no time for a Palenque but did head out of Oaxaca Centro to go to Monte Alban which was sick.
Worst part of the trip was by far Aeromexico. Busted online check-in system/app so everything basically had to be done at the airport (including my flight out of ORD). Additionally, when I showed up to OAX to leave there was no one working the counter. Finally a person showed up to process the enormous line that was basically out of the terminal, then a second about twenty minutes later, then a third maybe ten minutes after that. When I finally got to the counter after maybe an hour twenty I was told I was on standby and didn't have a seat on the flight I had booked in JANUARY. In the intervening months, the airline had shifted my reservation around a bunch so as things stood I had a one hour connection at MEX to the last flight of the day back to Chicago, meaning I was stuck for at least the night if I didn't get a seat. Called the customer service line but they were pretty much useless. I was the very last person called on the standby list but I think about 6 or 7 people definitely got stranded. Had to gate check my bag and based on everything up to that point I was incredibly nervous up until I saw my bag hit the carousel in O'Hare. tl;dr Oaxaca rules but you probably wanna fly American if you go

the removal of the bouncy walkways at SFO will make trips through there a little less fun.
