Fellas we have 6 lists out there, 7 when we count goodson's, which he sent to me. I will have mine ready soon-ish but I think adding a little more time might be good for me. Would that be good for you guys? I did not anticipate how draining this "having to go to work during a health crisis" thing was going to be and as a result have not been in much of a mood to do this sort of thing but I am doing much better now and will happily get it done soon. Would we get more submissions if we moved the deadline to a week from today?

I think The Master is a good movie with some great scenes early on, but kind of gets weak towards the end. I'm not understanding the 'Best of the 2000s so far' or 'Best of the Decade' accolades.
Also, I think Phantom Thread is a solid film, but I'm confused as to what you all see in it that is so brilliant.
Maybe I'm feeling this way because I watched Boogie Nights again last night and was reminded how fantastic it is.

The Master is a movie about a cult that doesn’t feel like every other formulaic movie about a cult, which deserves a considerable amount of credit. Crazy good performances from literally every actor too. Phantom Thread captures shifting power dynamics in subtle ways throughout that creates a really enjoyable dramatic tension. Boogie Nights is my favorite PTA film but it’s just a drastically different style.

Eh. I haven't liked any of his movies since There Will Be Blood but his work is pretty well revered here so the high rankings don't surprise me.

I really like movies that dig deep into the relationship between two characters whose lives are deeply intertwined but whose motivations or perspectives are at odds. That's an extremely broad category but it describes a lot of movies on my list, and The Master and Phantom Thread are both very well rendered versions of it. |
