Yo I never realized how short most set-times were at Coachella. There's like 3-4 acts each day that actually get a full hour? (aside from the final acts at each stage, idk how long those go for). Pretty much everyone getting like 40-50 minutes? I know they're cramming a TON of acts onto here, but that still strikes me as wild. They don't book any jam bands. They just added Vampire Weekend though

I distinctly remember being high as balls while this band I kinda-sorta listened to said "rattlesnake, rattlesnake" for like 20 minutes and it was awesome

(Int., Goldenvoice Offices, early fall 2023)
GV: Than you for coming in today Miss Cat. We wanted to talk about what you needed for your headlining performance next spring.
DC: Well, I’ll need dancers…
GV: Of course.
DC: Maybe some guests? Teezo and A$AP, possibly?
GV: We can arrange that.
DC: Also, a mud pit.
GV: Uhhh…ok. Anything else.
DC: Yeah, I’d like a T-Rex.
GV: ….
DC: …. GV: Ok thanks for coming, we’ll be in touch.

I personally agree but I doubt gv does. His crowd will probably be 3x as large as theirs.

I'll also say I could tell by their caption that they added Cudi but it took me embarrassingly long to find him buried in a late afternoon Sahara slot.

Finally getting around to my W1 recap...
We stayed again in the Rancho Mirage area and took the Omni Las Palmas shuttle stop, which may be an undiscovered gem. They provide shade and free cold water while waiting for departing buses and have a taco bar set up on the return. Also it seems wildly underutilized, at least early in the morning. I don't think there were more than 10 people on the first bus on any of the three days we were there and on the second day we had one all to ourselves.
No issues getting into the festival, walked right through security every day.
They expanded merch tent was a godsend. I never saw more than a 10-15 min line for festival merch and was in and out in less than 10 at 2:45p the first day. Artist merch was busy in the mornings but seemed to clear our some during the day. Don't know what the average wait was as we never hopped in that line.
Lockers are still a nightmare, we got in line right after we got there on Friday (~1:55) and it was a 35 minute wait. By the time we were done it was three times as long.
The expanded footprint certainly helped congestion in the area where Sahara used to be. There were never very large crowds at Quasar and going to Sahara was a bit more commitment. We didn't spend much time at either stage, just enough to say we saw them, but I hope we have more time at both next year.
It definitely did not feel very crowded this year, particularly before sundown. Not sure if that had to do with low attendance, new footprint or what, but between that and the ideal weather I was not complaining.
Day 1: Upchuck -> Mall Grab -> Chappell Roan -> Brittany Howard -> Black Country, New Road -> Clown Core -> Hatsune Mike -> Justice -> Lana. Chappell Roan is blowing up and her set was packed. I'd only heard bits and pieces of her stuff, but I really enjoyed this set, very high energy. I felt bad for Black Country, New Road and some other Sonora acts because. the bass bleed from the Coachella stage was ridiculous so it overpowered a lot of quieter moments. Clown Core was so odd but also right up my alley. The intention was only to see a few minutes of Hatsune Miku due to the novelty but we enjoyed it so much we stayed for most of the set. I was confused there was no hologram and thought maybe I misunderstood what "she" was, but apparently she usually is a hologram and fans are up in arms about this tour just featuring her on a big black LCD screen without announcing it beforehand. Didn't expect a live band or for it to be more hard rock-ish music. Justice was brilliant and we made a huge mistake and left their set a bit early to get a decent spot for Lana Del Rey. I love LDR but I've seen her five times now and I think I've only walked away once thinking "that was a great show". Was hoping this would be another great show but alas it was a snoozefest. I think there is just something about here "Disinterested Ingenue" thing that doesn't translate well to large spaces. Oh well.
Day 2: Militarie Gun -> Erika de Casier -> Young Fathers -> RAYE ->. The Adicts -> Palace -> Blur -> Brutalismus 3000 ->. Gessafelstein -> Tyler, The Creator. Militarie Gun were fine, but wolud not see them again, just not my thing. Young Fathers was probably the best set of the weekend. Just an unbelievable group. Special shout-out to be the only act I saw all weekend to call for a ceasefire and Free Palestine. RAYE has great potential but 80% of the packed Mojave was there just to hear some TikTok song. Also her vocals were very low and she talked way too much between songs. First time seeing The Adicts and was so impressed. The frontman still has the energy and charisma of someone half his age and the entire band sounded great. I was fortunate enough to see the Blur warmup show in Pomona so was on the fence about going to the Coachella set. I'm glad I did. It was very sparsely attended (we walked up 10 minutes before they started and easily could have found a spot in the front pit). We decided to hang back a little to have more room to move and dance. I know there has been talk about Damon being pissy or whatever but I just felt he was being sardonic. He mentioned several times how privileged he felt to be back and honestly I think he likes the challenge of an audience that may not be super familiar with the band. Most importantly I was able to hear all those songs live one more time. I think Brutalismus 3000 was a psy-op to mass hypnotize a large group of people into being Manchurian Candidates. That's not a complaint. I really enjoyed the last time Gessafelstein played but I think this was even better. The music was more interesting and he ditched the gimmicky total black back drop. Tyler was fun as always but I didn't bring enough layers so had to leave about 20 min earlier due to wind chill.
Day 3: jjuujjuu -> Ludmilla -> Mdou Moctar -> Klingande -> Renee Rapp -> Eddie Zuko -> The Rose -> Bebe Rexha -> Mandy, Indiana -> Lil Yachty -> Atarashii Gakko! - > Doja Cat. Lots of partila sets this day. jjuujjuu was cool. Kinda like a psychedelic version of White Zombie. Mdou Moctar was a new discovery for me and a highlight of the weekend. Wicked guitar player and a good vibe all around. Renee Rapp has some good pipes and good stage presence and I could honestly see her being a future headliner. Mandy, Indiana was criminally underattended, maybe 100 people in the whole venue. But what a show. Valentine spent about 30% of the show in the audience and is a hell of a frontwoman. Atarashii Gakko! is one of those bookings that have me coming back to Coachella every year. Someone I'd never heard of before the festival but god damn what a show. I moved more at this set than any other and it was probably my favorite of the weekend. I'm a casual fan of Doja Cat, if that. We caught about the last hour of it, and to her credit she did have a great production and performance. To her discredit, she might be a proto-fascist?
So that's it. Not the best Coachella I've been too but we always have a great time and I'm sure I will return next year.
